I have a 2005 Ford Focus. My vent distribution knob turns freely but does not change air direction. It remains blowing from the defrost vents. I pooped off the face around the knobs and stereo to look inside. The vent selector knob was not connected and the component appeared to have popped off , but then I noticed two silver tension cables that are sticking out freely . From the back side of that disconnected component are 2 thicker black wires intact, and a grey clip with smaller wires intact. I feel this component has snapped and broke. Can I easily replace it and if so what is it called, I cant seem to find any similar part online. Can I replace that part with those wires still attached to the back of it? All the other knobs are connected and work as they are suppose to. If I am unable to replace it, can I at lease adjust it somehow to where the air blows out the front vents instead of the defrost vent? Dont see how I can get it to turn or select a different setting. Thank you so much ! C4tag

The part you're describing is the blend door actuator. It diverts air through the different ports, (floor, vent, defrost, mix). The good news is depending on what you need (new lever or new blend door) the price runs about $30-40. As far as ease of installation, it sounds like you have unobstructed access so replacing it shouldn't be too difficult.

2005 Ford Focus. Air is blowing out of the floor vents and defrost vents but not dash vents. Also the knob will not go onto the dash vent option it's like it just springs back up.

A failure has occurred in the HVAC system, legally, when a fault happens the hvac system will default to defrost/floor. Further diagnostics will be needed to determine issue.

Cold& warm/air would not blow out in any vents. Put in new direction switch, air blow in all vents except the defrost vent. Swtich on defrost and it blows in dash vents in your face and nothing coming out...

The switch that controls the air flow is either operated /controlled using either wire, pneumatics, or electrically driven/controlled. Make sure that all of the connections at the damper are intact and working properly. Pneumatically driven is usually the most common on todays vehicles, so make sure you don't have a vacuum leak on any of the damper hoses.

my knob broke from turning it because it became hard to turn--- i think the actuator is jammed or broke because even with a new knob, it turns freely and does not change selections.

The air vent function selector switch on my 2005 Ford Focus turns freely, but does not change the flow (vents/floor /window/etc). The problem arose last month and the Ford dealer changed the cable...

there is a synchronous motor attached to the switch via wires and controls a door that directs the airflow. it is usually near the fan motor. They cost about $50, maybe more.
