A service on my Toyota Rav 4 2003 shows p1135 a/f sensor heater fault b1-s1 fault with lambda sensor. How does this affect car running is it safe?

OK a bit of background. The oxygen or lambda sensor determines the amount of air in the exhaust gases. It does this by producing a voltage inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen present. When the oxygen is low the voltage is about 1 volt and when the oxygen is high it is less than 0.1 volt. The ECU uses this feed back to continuously adjust the amount of fuel injected for combustion. These sensors only work effectively when they are hot. The manufacturers of sensors include a heater element within the sensor tip to preheat the sensor at start up when the engine is cold. Most modern oxygen sensors have four wires to them, two for the heater (often of the same color) and two for the oxygen sensor circuit. If the heater element fails the sensor is unable to work effectively when starting the engine up. In this case the sensor reports a low voltage which the ECU reads as "high oxygen in the exhaust" or a 'lean' condition and tries to compensate by injecting more fuel. When the engine eventually warms up and the exhaust gases get hot the sensor then begins to function and the ECU will reduce the amount of fuel being injected once more. It is perfectly safe to drive the vehicle. However if you are making lots of short trips in which the engine rarely gets to reach hot running conditions your fuel consumption will suffer badly as the ECU will be injecting way more fuel than you need. You will also find that your exhaust smells of un-burnt fuel and your idle maybe a bit fast and lumpy with the over rich injection cycles. Often a 'bad heater' can be just down to a bad connection due to dirt, or more often corrosion, in the plug/socket to the actual sensor and a few cycles of connecting and disconnecting it can fix it. Replacing a sensor is not catastrophically expensive, $100 or so for the part (Denso or NGK) but that can rise if the garage also fits it.

On a front to back engine b1 is the drivers bank. On a transverse engine b1 is the front bank ( b1 has cylinder 1, b2 has cylinder 2 in a v type configuration) s1 is always between the engine and the catalytic converter. Usually in the exhaust manifold or the down pipe.

How many parts have the P1135 diagnostic code on a 2003Toyota Rav 4? I have replaced the air/fuel sensor and the code P1135 comes back on. I'm being told now that it's 2 sensors in the a/c


The air/fuel sensor and the a/c are two different entities. P1135 is the bank1 sensor 1 air fuel heater circuit code. If you have a four cylinder this sensor would be before the catalytic converter. Since this is a heater circuit issue I would check fuss to wake sure the heater fuse, if one is present, is not blown. Also what brand of sensor did you install? Did you clear the code with a scan tool after you installed the new part.

I have a p1135 code does that mean it the o2 sensor cause i have change the mass air sensor


Code P1135 is a vehicle specific code for selected Toyota vehicles - it really helps to know what car you are working on...Year, Make, Model, Engine Size, Automatic or Manual Transmission, etc. There may be Technical Service Bulletins that apply to your vehicle that cover things like reprogramming the engine controller to correct this code, etc. Nobody can give you that information if they don't know what kind of vehicle we are talking about.

In general, the code description for code P1135 is "Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Circuit (California Emissions )"
The possible causes are
1. Open or shorted Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (AF) circuit
2. Faulty AF sensor
3 AF sensor heater or heater circuit shorted or open
4. Engine Control Module (ECM) Fault

The Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) cannot cause this code - this is a "CIRCUIT" code, not a not a "LEAN" or "RICH" Oxygen Sensor (or AF Sensor) code. The MAF can only cause lean or rich codes.

Most of the time, this code is caused by the sensor itself, however, as I mentioned earlier, there are Technical Service Bulletins for several Toyotas that involve reprogramming of the Engine Computer.

One of the dash board lights on my 2007 toyota rav 4 won't cut off, what is wrong with it? It's not the oil light


Sounds like the Orange engine light is on? If yes, the 07 Rav 4 is a great car but suffers greatly with Lambda faults. You need the code read to be sure plus there are 4 lambda's on your car.

If it is a Red triangle light staying on then it could be low brake fluid level.

My check engine light is on and I received code P1135, Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering is the defintion of the code. What parts do I need to get to fix problem myself?

I have 8000 miles on my Tucson check engine light came on at start up this morning...gas cap is tight...no problems?????
