From 62-70 mph the rear end of the car gets so loud you can't talk over it. no "clunks or thunks" just gets loud - sorta like a kitchen mixer turned to high speed, only much louder. Don't know the car history, but it has 97k on it and a "towing package" with tow bar and "adjustable air suspension" (flip a switch) No noise at lower speeds, and no vibration.

Sounds like you have a bad bearing (axle, pinion or carrier sides) You need to do some further checking to determine which. Low differential lube level will also cause a noise but if you've driven it that way for any length of time the bearings are likely ruined and possibly the gears too.
Aside from axle bearing work, anything inside the diff will be very expensive and generally your best option would be a used one from a scrapyard.

Thanks. We'll look into the bearing asap. Your input was really appreciated!!

Hello, Thought to have the differential lube checked? I had a 1994 Crown Vic and it had 161,000 miles on it when I sold it.

Although you need to reduce the overall speed, try turning your Overdrive button off and see if the noise goes away. The overdrive kicks in above 42MPH and if that is when your car starts to grind, its a good possibility for trouble.

Aside from that, the 3rd and 4th gear synchronizers or gears could be going. You could pull off the trans pan and see how much metal is in the pan.

You won't be going much longer if it is making this noise. Also try car-parts.com for Salvaged parts. It has an instant request feature and gives pricing, location, warranty, and contact info for all types of parts.

Testimonial: "Thanks! The noise seems to be coming from the rear end - but could be the tranny.... will take it in soon as the holidays are over. It'll sit for now"

Vibrates terribly over 65 mph

sounds like you have a wheel alignment problem. Not enough castor set. Have the front end checked out for loose worn bits. If you have a steering shocky in the system it is probably shot and not doing the job of stabilising the steering. Remember if the springs are a bit flat IE the front end is a bit low then the whole steering geometery alters and negative castor results as what you have described

Replace rear upper strut end case on 2002 xg350

We use this site from home as you do,nothing
special here

You will need to go to repair shops for the price quote part

You can get a general idea on the strut price from Rock Auto.Com

The top strut bearings are most likely one problem,as you indicated
& the other is that the struts are just old & rusted away on top & the
oil leaks out & they need to be replaced

The dust boot, plastic or rubber isn't loose or an issue,it gets reused

My car makes a loud clunking noise at around 65mph.

Not sure if this is this answer, but I had a problem with a noise under the front end once....turned out to be the cowling under the front bumper....it was broken and it took a high speed to force it down enough to hit the road.

Good luck!!

Rear end thumping noise

Depending on the year of your gto it could be a buggered CV joint on one of your back wheels. All GTO/3000GT are four wheel drive but up to the mid to late 90's they had four wheel steering. The usual symptoms of a buggered CV joint are loud rattling and/or vibrating from the affected wheel at around 30 - 40 mph and often a loud clunk when cornering at low speed
