A clogged catalytic converter or a restricted exhaust will cause over heating. Also a cracked head or bad gasket. Also, if your engine timing is very far off it will overheat. Make sure you have all the air out of your cooling system and it is actually running hot, not just your gauge showing it's hot.
I hope this helps.

Could possibly be a head gasket, pressurize the cooling system and see if it holds pressure and for how long (only to about 15psi), and if the system holds, you may need to check for the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system.

Have you checked to see if the thermostat is functioning correctly and is not jammed shut. That would cause overheating.

Over heating, i tried a new thurostat but did not help the over heating,

clogged radiator? bad water pump...cooling systems are quite simple...water circulates through the engine under the force of the pump...even if the thermostat is working it still needs the pump to move the water...still have the old thermostat? put it in a pot of cold water on the stove and turn on the burner...see if it opens at the proper temp setting...if the old one does you dd not need a new one..oh, I have installed brand new thermostats that were bad...

Where is the thermostat housed on a 1996 Nissan Sentra? I followed the top radiator hose to the engine but it didnt lead me to a housing casing for the thermostat.

oh, a sentra is the bottom hose, follow that to engine you will see the housing it has 2 or 3 nuts holding it to the block, good luck,

I have a 1996 nissan sentra gxe.... I just replaced the radiator today and the car still over heated, my only thought as to what the problem could be was the water pump. how do I change the water pump?

sounds like you have a thermostat problem also did you bleed the cooling system of all the air before you put the radiator cap on?
if you have not bleed the system and there is a air lock you will have over heating problems.
the way you can try bleeding the car is let it get up to temp with the rad cap off and let the fans cycle twice and wate till all the air bubbles stop stop coming out.
if the air dosn't stop coming out for a long long time you may have a blown head gasket

2003 Nissan Sentra Problem overheating and heater doesn't work.

does the car overheat at idle or travelling down the road? if the thermostat was not changed, thats first step. checking it is replacing it. possibly air-bound. then i would suspect a headgasket problem.
