Most likely the AC compressor clutch isn't engaged. This happens when the refrigerant pressure switch doesn't detect pressure in the coolant lines. The cause is usually a refrigerant leak.
This way the AC compressor is protected from running dry and possible damage.
Let your local repairshop check AC line pressure - if no pressure, look for the leak first then refill with fresh refrigerant.
