Where's the thermostat on a 96 audi a6

Trace the upper radiator hose to the mounting area on the intake manifold. Loosen the hose clamp on the manifold end of the hose and remove the hose. Pull the thermostat out of the intake manifold.

When you put it back, did you turn it an extra time? You have two strokes of compression. If you just turned it back once, it is probably on the exhaust compression, which means it is not at TDC. If you did, it will need turned once more to be at the highest point from TDC.

96 Audi means its OBD 1 protocol! if you have a obd 1 diagonsis tool you can check the ECU!

If you are looking for the transmission dipstick, there is none; The auto tranny is not serviceable by the end user (unless you have special equipnet and a VAG scanner in your garage).

No, they are not. THe A4 and the A6 chassis are different, the bumpers have a similar style and look to them, but they are not interchangable.

Hi Sounds like your thermostat needs replacing to cure the cold running.
As for the ticking sound, check your engine oil first, if its OK. its usually the hydraulic tappets, and a can of STP or Wyns oil addative in with the engine oil, can sometimes quieten them down !
