  • You want to have the Over Drive off unless you are driving over 60 miles per hour on the highway. If you drive around with the OD on all the time the car will have less pickup and worse gas mileage. Overdrive is best used on the highway at cruising speeds of 60 MPH or better as it easier on the engine and fuel consumption is reduced as well.
  • It does not necessarily hurt the car to drive it in OD but the driving will not be as desirable. Nothing is wrong with your vehicle or the light. When you turn the vehicle on just turn the OD off and drive. When you are driving on the highway and you hit 60 push the OD button and you will be able to tell the car is driving "easier."
  • Hope this helps,

Regards, Tony

Having overdrive on, just allows your car to have the option of shifting into it's final gear. When you turn overdrive off, you are preventing your car from using it's final gear. That is the simple function of the overdrive button. Leave it on ALL THE TIME, unless you are towing or going uphill. That is the only time you don't want your vehicle shifting into overdrive.

No, you don't want it on all the time. Especially if your in town driving, stop and go like most people do most of the time. You don't need that final gear unless you are driving over a certain MPH, like I originally wrote. Your welcome to sign up for FixYa and put your "skills" to the test if you want. But you will have to do better than what you typed above to make it on here.

Drive or over drive light flashes in the dash

You have to get the trouble codes that have been set. When the OD light flashes, it means the computer has set a code for the problem. Scan the Powertrain Control Module-the main computer with the diagnostic connector.

OD light on dash is always on

When you start your car and see the OD Off light come on momenterialy, it only comes on to let you know that the light on the dashboard is working. If you do nothing, you have the OD on.

If you press the button on the gearshift, the OD will turn off and the light on the dash should light showing that OD is off. Press the button again, and the light should go off showing the OD is on.

Under normal driving conditions, the OD should be on and the light on the dash should be off.

So remember, when OD light is off, the OD is on.

The trans is inover drive only i pnt one in it and i drove the one it come out of

on the end of the lever that puts the car in gear is a button. This controls whether the overdrive is on or off. When overdrive is "off" a light comes on with OD showing on the dash. If the light is "off" then you are in overdrive. so when the light comes on push the button in the shifter handle. if you tow something you want the light to come back on "deactivating the overdrive" and you should see the dash light. You may just have a burnt out light bulb in the dash for this.

I have a light on my dash that says o/d off

i assume that you have a sentra 1997 automatic transmission. OD orange light on your dash means that your overdrive is not engaged meaning your sentra is not on fuel efficient mode.

solution: in your automatic stick shift, driver side is a button just below the T bar. press that button until the OD light dissapears on your dash. you're now in overdrive mode.

Trannie, no drive no od,no 2 will go in r low 1

if you drove it too far too fast in 4 wheel low. you could have done some serious damage to the trani. i have the same truck in a 1998 and the tachomiter goes nuts at 15 mph in 4 low. it was never meant to drive for any distance in 4 low. if your lucky. when your rearend went it didn't take out your drive shaft. if your not lucky. your drive shaft took some punishment and in turn damaged the trani.

What is the od off light mean?

Transmission Overdrive Off. Likely a push button switch on the dash to control this; some driving conditions are better coped with without overdrive(more power for towing, etc) but ordinarily you would want OD on for economy.
