This is the speed in and speed out sensors on the transmission. I just had the same problem. The sensors are about 25 dollars and are easy to replace

Please Help!!! 1999 Mercury Sable doesn't seem to accelerate past first gear..engine revs up to very high rpms.

If the speedometer stops working the odometer stops also. Sounds like it is stuck in first gear. The RPM went up because the throttle was response to pedal but transmission not response. Check transmission fluid color. Whip off dipstick on a white paper towel look for gray if see any that is metal shavings and transmission is bad.

Speedometer won't work at all.

If the speedometer and odometer are both dead, the problem is usually the speed sensor in the transmission.
If only the speedometer is dead, the speedometer and cluster may have to be repaired or replaced.

The car will not shift into gear.. speed odometer not working

sounds like a bad speed sensor. The speed sensor sends info to your speedometer and with the sensor not working, the car will not shift because it thinks its not moving.
Hope this helped you.

My 99 dodge intrepid speed odometer dont work and its not shifting into gear

This is the result of the Transmission Output Sensor failure. The new part is around $20. Labor ? s/b less than one hour. I had the same problem with my 1999 LHS. The dealer wanted to remove and replace the tranny for $2400. I towed it to private mech and he did the job for $200. This is a VERY FREQUENT problem with chrylser cars as many share the same sensor. The problem is usually called "Transmission going limp". Hey, if your engine starts to die and the tacho goes to zero, your crankshaft sensor is going also.

Transmission stays in one gear

One your speed sensors are bad, or have gunk on them You have an input and output sensor. Change them both. These sensors tell the car when to shift, and engage the door locks. It also contrls your speedometer....
