Question about 1997 Saturn SL

1 Answer

1997 SL2 5-Spd. Shifter is completely loose. Car is stuck in 5th. Shifter will swing full range back and forth and about half way side to side. Car was stuck in reverse, but I messed around with it a bit and got it into 5th, but can't make anything else happen. I love this car. Has 230K on it and really hope to make 250K. Any ideas what is the problem?

Napa has the replacement part for the shifter, it's about $20, or you can go to the dealer and they will sell you both cable assy. for around $200

Floppy stick shifter, car stuck in gear

I am sure that there are parts that are worn out in the shifter, I see this complaint a lot for Old Saturns. It will be a miracle is you can get the parts to fix the worn out bushing and such

My dodge neon stuck in first gear wont go in any other gear its all play

There are bushings in the linkage for the shifter under the car at the shifter and at the trans. Those wear out or the retaining pin clip may have come off and pin got loose.

The shifter/transmission on my manual 5 spd 1999 Saturn SL1

This just happen to me a few weeks ago. If you take out the center piece in the car you should be able to see that the actual shifter is no longer connected to the rod which goes into the transmission. It is an easy problem to fix, however it is not cheap. I was told that you have to buy a complete new kit($250.00) for the shifter, however my dad gave me a different solution. He took some wire, and made a spider web type thing to keep it connected. On my car it was a small round plastic piece that broke, but I cannot remember what it was actually called. This little piece is not available through Saturn by itself, only through a complete kit. Please ask questions if this is not clear enough. Thanks :)

My 87 VW Jetta is stuck in second gear and shifter just flops around. Any Adjusting feedback greatly apreciated..Dean

Front wheel drive cars with transaxles use a shifter cable that runs from the shifter to the transaxle. Have a look under the hood and see if the cable broke loose from the linkages, or from the shifter itself.
Best thing to do in this situation is to have a mechanic look at it. There's really nothing that anyone here can fix without having a look at the car and troubleshooting it.
