I CAN NOT CLOSE THE REAR TIRE GATE IT WILL NOT LATCH

It won't close or won't latch? Check to see that the latch isn't already in the "latched" position. You may have to release the latch and pull it at the same time.

Replace the gate latch. Open the gate, remove the top panel first, it pops off. Remove the bottom, 2 to 4 screws to remove, then it pops off. This gives you access to remove the latch.

You probably need to pull the manual release and physically move the latch back into its unmatched position. The latch hook will rotate open so that it can receive the fixed bar on the body.

it sounds like the striker might be out of adjustment, or a spring came loose or broke you can also try spraying some good penetrating oil due to the water that is kicked up from your rear tires will rust up these parts

Mine did this too....the latch kept getting stuck. If you put the key in the ignition and unlock the power doors, pull on the gate door (don't open it, just enough to release the latch), and it should come out so the hatch will latch.

can you hear the latch release when you try to open? if no clicking noise is heard then most likely a bad latch assembly. also check the rear door control module to see if smells burnt, if it does it won't send open signal. the module is located behind the plastic shroud on the left of the rear hatch.

more likely than not the latch has closed some how if you have some one hold the the handle to open the tailgate you can open the latch by hand with a screw driver if your not sure what it should look like look at another door latch in the open position very simple to do and you cant hurt anything doing it this way

Look at the door's locking mechanism. Is the Latch Gate in the down position? Is the Door Mechanism properly tightened to the door? These are Torx/Hex head bolts. Tighten these if needed.
If the Latch Gate is down:
1. Unlock the door.
2. Lift up/out on the Door Handle as if you were opening the door.
3. Use a screwdriver to lift the Latch Gate so it lifts the Gate up and out of the way.
Alot of these Gates have plastic coverings that sometimes split and stick or cause the door mechanism to jam. Inspect the Door Mechanism for anything that could be causing it to jam. Using a pair of needle nose pliers remove any of this split plastic (if so equipped) pulling as much of it off the Latch Gate.
Use WD40 with the red spraying hose on and stick it as many openings you can and lubricate as much of the Door Mechanism as you can.
Check the operations (plural) of the Door Mechanism, Opening and Closing the Gate using the screw driver to push in the Striker Gate causing the Latch Gate to rotate back down into position. Repeat... checking for the Latch Gate to Release Up (on it's own) when you "open" the door. If it doesn't, then there is either jammed or a return spring is broken.
Have you dented or distorted the Door and / or Door Mechanism in the process of trying to slam the door close? You will have to either bend the the door area back to as close to possible the original shape. Use the other door on the other sides as a guide on this. You may have to replace the Door Mechanism itself, as when they are malfunctioning and are slammed (over and over) it could break the Mechanism itself. If the Mechanism is broke, you will have to remove and replace the entire mechanism.

Hello and welcome the problem is very simple to resolve first make sure you have battery power turn off vehicle open rear gate unlock doors go to rear gate and look at lock unlock again and push the Grey plastic lock trigger mechanism forward towards front glass close gate unlock again make sure lock is still in the position you just set it to and close glass it will the lock. Normally what happens in this situation was power was removed from your jeep and the rear gate was opened with no power running to electric lock so it stays in a set position you cannot lock the glass because there was no power in the electric lock I will lock once you reset it Hope this help. at the latch see if you can maually open and close if you can you may need to adjust striker on the rear floor it may have been moved causing it too hit the outside of the latch
