They do have bolt extractors that you can purchase. Or get a pair of vise grips and clamp it on as tight as you can get it and hit it with a hammer. And you are correct about how to remove the bolt.

I need to replace the oil pan in a 2001 dodge neon. Is this a DYI job??

Do you need to replace the oil pan it self or just the oil pan seal? This can been a DYI job, depending on your experience working with cars. You will need a your basic tools. (Jack Stands, Jack, Oil Container, wrenches and sockets, new oil and filter.) The first thing you will need to do is drain the oil. This is a good time to change your oil since you will be taking the oil pan completely off.
Steps to removing oil pan
1) Set car on jack stands or ramps in order to work under the car. (Be Safe, Be Smart!)
2) You will need a wrench or socket to remove oil drain plug and drain the oil out of the car
-This is a good time to change your oil, so replace oil filter as well.
3) Once the oil is drained you can take of the oil pan off. Most oil pans are just bolted. Not to hard to take of.
4) Once off this is a good time to clean the oil pan if your just replacing the gasket. Do not use lubricant cleaners like wd-40. Brake cleaner has worked for me, you can also ask your local auto shop or autozone for a good cleaner.
5)Replace the oil pan with new gasket making sure there are no tears in gasket and it sits well between the oil pan and engine block. (Make sure there is nothing in the oil pan as well that could cause harm)
6) once you replaced the oil pan its just as simple as putting oil back into your car like you are changing your oil.

Need to locate oil drain plug

Look at your engine, right below it, at the very button of it, is a pan, that's the oil pan, the pan will have a drain plug, unscrew it and let oil drain into a pan.

What size drain plug fits on a 2002 dodge neon?

Your best bet will be to go to a salvage yard and take one off one of the Neons there, with permission from the owners. Just any plug won't do. The bore size and threadding have to be exact, or the pan will leak.

My 2002 dodge neon has check engine light with coded p0302. I know to try replacing the plug/wires, are there any other common causes for this error code that I should check out?

Hi! When replacing the plugs and wires on this model be sure there is no oil in spark plug wells. You will notice the oil on the plug wire boot when removing it. If there is any oil on any of the boots the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals will need to be replaced or the misfire code you mentioned will return. Hope this information helps!

OIl drain plug removal 99 dodge neon DOHC

It appears that the threads are stripped on the bolt or pan. To remove the bolt, try having a helper put a couple of screwdrivers (flat) between the bolt and pan, and while you turn the drain bolt to loosen, have them apply pressure downward on the bolt. If you have a carpenters flat pry bar, that would probably work even better to apply downward pressure to help remove the bolt. Next, you'll have to go to a parts store to get a drain plug that is made to replace one w/ bad threads. Let me know how you do. countrcurt0
