I own a 2001 jeep cherokee laredo. when i start off it will shut off while driving, but starts right backup will do this two or three times then runs fine after that. acts like it stops getting power all the gauges drop.

Chrysler products are notorious for the crankshaft sensor going out and causing the symptoms you are describing. It also won't set a code to turn the check engine light on.

When they sputter it is mostly the fuel pump. One way to check is hit the bottom of the tank in the center. The vibration will jar the pump and most times they will start pumping again. This is not a fix, you still have to replace the pump. This is just an easy way to make sure your changing the right part.
you might want to check you cam shaft sensor amd also there is a different sensor under the distutor i had to replace both of these on my 95 jeep grand cherokee laredo
