1994 caravan...transmission problem?....speed output sensor ?

While driving at normal road speed then dropping below 45mph sounds like it drops into 1st gear .If continuing to drive the engine SOUNDS like your in neutral and is hard to get up to speed, engine racing. If you pull over and shut it down it works fine as long as you don't go over 45mph then have to slow to below that.

problems going over 45mph or on a long ride

  • Anonymous Sep 03, 2008

I have a 1993 caravan c/v 3.3 engine with the four speed automatic. It shifts into second gear and stays there until u stop and restart engine and then it will do it again in a few miles. I have had a trans shop replace the solenoid body and I have replaced the engine computor.. Still doing the same thing.. This transmission was rebuilt by amoco a few years ago and has less than 60,000 miles on the rebuild.. It does not slip , it just goes to second gear and stays there until you stop and restart engine.. Help......

I changed the transmission control module, located on the firewall on the passenger side under hood. Now the transmission works fine. Bought it at pull a part junk yard for 20.00 and thought what the heck I will try this. It worked.. amen

Hi Tyler, difficult to say without more details, but it sounds to me like the sensor monitoring the RPM for the engine management unit is faulty and the engine management cannot compensate. Bad connections will give more problems during cold times because metal shrink and connectors might loose contact. Best would be to get it checked out by someone that knows for your safety, this sounds very unpredictable and dangerous. Hope this helps.

Whats wrong with Helen?

The speed sensor might be bad. I used to own a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the same symptons. The car will start, but will not pass the 1st or 2nd gear, the speedometer will be at 0. I replaced the speed sensor and all the problems went away.

Sounds like the transmission is done. Time for a rebuild/replace.

Losing power going up hills

sounds pretty normal. what speed do you try out the passing gear? anything above 35-45 mph and it will feel like neutral. Passing gear is actually only 1st gear. When you press down the pedal, it forces the transmisson to shift into low gear.

Oil pressure dropped to zero when stopped at a stop light, picks back up when driving down the road. checked oil have plenty, coolant also reading low

Unfortunately this sounds like the symptoms of worn main engine bearings. Most likely crankshaft, but possibly connecting rod bearings as well. When the bearings wear to a point that the oil clearance between the lobe and the bearing is to far out of spec this causes a drop in oil pressure throughout the oil system. If you continue to drive the Jeep more damage WILL be done, in particular to the valve trane. Normally to replace the main bearing the engine is removed from the vehicle. I have replaced main (crankshaft) bearings without removing the engine, but it is a time consuming process. If you're interested in a tutorial of how I have done this, post comments in this thread.

When driving under 50 mph car engine reves up and trys to change gears I drive it in overdrive should I turn overdrive off when not exceding more than 50mph?

the car will try to drive as economically as possible,so will try to run in the highest gear for a given road speed,in town driving,it is more comfortable if the o/d is OFF.but for cruising at,say,45mph,with a light throttle then o/d should be ON.

I have a GMC 2003 Envoy, each time i drive it sounds like im speeding but im going really slow , i need to change the oil could this affect that and what do i do about the sound

Difficult to know what sounds like speeding: engine, road noise, what ?

If the oil change were to help, you have bad, bad engine problems. I suspect you may have a wheel bearing that may have failed. This makes a lot of road noise, alters with vehicle speed and NOT engine speed (drop to idle, noise the same).
There is a possibility of transmission slipping. this lets your engine speed up, but not actually move the car.

There is a third common issue and that is FAN. When your fan clutch fails, is locks up a normally free spinning (somewhat) fan, as if the vehicle needed max cooling... This noise follows engine speed, the vehicle seems to go just fine, but huge noise.... This sometimes is called Jeep fan noise, as many of those used to have direct drive fans.... If this is your case, the fan clutch gets replaced, not huge $, but more than it should be.

My 2002 trailblazer is making a noise when I go over 45 mph and appears to not be going in gear quickly at that speed

Check your transmission fluid level and/or have the fluid changed. If problem persist have a transmission professional at a dealership or transmission shop service it.

i'am no expert on this car, but i would chk. the T.P.S. (throutle positioning sensor) there also may be carbon build up on throutle butterfly, not letting it close completely when you take your foot off the pedel.
