Question about 1989 Buick Park Avenue

1989 Buick Park Avenue 3.8 Sutters or Jitters

My car will stutter or jitter sometimes, usually up hills. However, it will also do it sometimes just sitting at a light. It feels like the a/c compressor is getting ready to seize but does it even with the a/c off. There are no check engine lights on or other problems. The car has always been garaged and is in amazing shape. All maintenance has been performed on a regular basis. It's almost in 'as new' condition. I checked the plugs and they're all buring perfectly and in great condition. Wires also appear to be 'like new'. It starts and runs fine otherwise. Can you help? David

Hi, crazy, study your problem, about the shifting from 1-2nd. It's your tranny, the Buick P/Ave 89 that I own did the Identicle thing, except it did it 2-3rd. These Buick are one of a kind. They are properly constructed, which carries me to your tranny. Your Buick will run as is for a little while, You really can't step on it from take off. However, what's occurring is that the trans is falling apart in tiny pieces? It will slowly worsened. I replaced my tranny. I didn't rebuild, that would have cost near $1,700. Instead I purchased a nearly new one for 300.00 with a 3 month warranty in addition to my mechanic did the rest and my entire cost was 890.00 that's parts plus labor and that's in Monterey,ca. You can perhaps get it done cheaper in your area? Anyway, it Runs like new! Hope this helps.... Mlns209.

I own a 89 Park ave. and I'm the original owner. I have over 146,000 miles and the 3.6 engine is one of the top 20 best motors. However from what you say about the jitters, it's the Transmission. I'm 100 percent sure. My buick did the same thing. When I'm at a stop light and about ready to take off or if I make a U turn. The car would shake then stop and would scare the heck out of me as if it was giving birth. I live in Monterey, ca. and our home sits up on top a small hill and on the way up it would do the jitters. It's the trans for sure, any time I see an 89 park ave. out in the junk yard, they always say the engine still runs but needs a transmission. Well good luck! As for my buick I replaced the Transmission, I love that car so much. Keep in touch and let me know if there is anything I can help with. I'll be checking for your reponse. Bye

Sitting at a steady speed on motorway it stutters

If you are travelling at about 55 to 65 mph and it does this then your wheels need balancing its about £7 per wheel and nothing to worry about, but do get it done asap. other thing could be the brakes but its unlikey you would feel it at speed.

Take it to your local mechanic to get an OBD code check. It should tell you the problem, and you can get an estimate on the fix unless you want to do it yourself. It could be a fuel filter issue.
