1997 Saturn SL2 Sunroof problem

Hello,
I have just purchased a 1997 Saturn SL2 with 125k miles. This is my first car and I'm super super excited. It has a sunroof which I love, but it does not work. When you press the button, (it's motorized) it makes an aweful noise. I was curious how to fix it and the cost of fixing it. I mean I'm not sure if I can fix it myself or if I have to take it somewhere. Thanks so much!

It sounds like the motor's gears went. I had the same problem. To see if it is the motor or track drop the headliner down a lil in the front near the map lights. Then push up on the center of the motors drive with a flat head screw driver and turn if the sunroof opens then it is the motor if not it is the track. You can buy new or use cost is up to you her is one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-SATURN-POWER-SUNROOF-MOTOR-96-97-98-404-328_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ50459QQihZ018QQitemZ280272955699QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW#ebayphotohosting

Fuse is the cheapest solution, I'd start there. Then perhaps light bulbs and/or relays.

1997 Saturn SC2 squeals very loud the first 3-5miles

Try replacing the belt tensioner. Comes out easily, once you figure out access to it. Remove inspection panel inside front passenger side wheel well. Tensioner is right there, two bolts. If the spring gets weak, the belt will squeak.

Water leaks from under dash on the passenger and driver side and water leaks from the visors on both sides 1997 saturn s series

If you have a sunroof then the problem is most likely a drainage problem with the sun roof. The drains are blocked and the water is running down into the car.

The under the dash thing is the only thing that worries me. That is usually the location where the heater core will leak to. Are you sure it is water and not coolant? Coolant gives off a sweet smell and when it's hot you know cause it stinks.

But my money is on a sunroof leak and drainage problem if you indeed have a sunroof.

The car is using 1 quart every 1100 miles and has only 110.000 miles on it

Although I have never had oil consumption in that range, I recall having seen someone whining about Saturn (I HATE SATURNS) while I was looking for a potential class-action lawsuit and they were using a quart every ~ 1500 miles on a car with some 20-30,000 miles and were also told that this was 'in the right range.'
That may be an indication of wear causing oil loss so it bears close watching.

My Saturn, purchased new, dropped a rod cap at 57,600 miles after eating thousands of dollars for many other failures. I would have been glad to see a 100k on it before it died . . .
