Open the bonnet (hood) and prop open with a golf umbrella, remove three bolts holding the wing onto the engine compartment and one bolt in the middle of the door frame (with the door open), you can then pull the wing off enough to be able to remove / change the aerial.
The fixing at the bottom of the aerial unit to a bracket on the wing can be difficult to undo; I just broke it off and fitted the new aerial without the bottom bracket fixing.

The replacement only costs about $20. The dealer can also provide a replacement but it can cost upwards of $50+. Part number is 5035944.

The hardest part is removing the metal sleeve from the mast pole. Once you get this out, refit the new mast with the teeth so the motor will pull the new mast down when you turn the radio off. refit the 17mm nut on top of the mast and then turn the radio back on. It will click a few times and then be properly set.

The grinding noise means that the gear in the motor slides over the retracting shaft, you will probably need to get a new one.

How do I get my antenna off on a 1988 Nissan pulsar?

I can't find information on your model but generally a car aerial doesn't represent many problems unless it is a roof aerial sited in the centre front or rear of the roof. In this case it is usually necessary to access the underside of the aerial.
If the aerial is at the corner of the roof, retracting into a windscreen pillar, the manual versions sometimes withdraw upwards after releasing a single screw but sometimes they must be withdrawn downwards, especially if it is an electrically operated version. In this case access is usually restricted and there is limited room to withdraw the unit. Replacing this type of aerial is usually a struggle from start to finish entailing the removal of under-dash units, carpet, insulation and so forth.

Good luck!

Hi,just want to know where fuse for electric aerial is situated as aerial is damaged and makes terrible noise when i start my truck and turn it off.my vehicle is a 1996 mitsubishi challenger

Hi,
Ussually the fuse is in the aerial motor connector or comes with the radio fuse.
If ur annoyed by the antenna, just disconnect the electrical connector in the antenna, not the antenna wire!

U could buy the rod of the antenna only it is chepaer than buying the whole assembly!

Order it in ur nearest parts dealer!

Automatic antenna on my '97 500sl is not being driven up and down. Antenna motor runs when radio turned on and off. Antenna slides up and down manually very easily.

Mercedes preferred supplier of aerial masts is Hirschmann. There is a connector to the top of the box a coax aerial connection to the mast root, an earth lead strap and a bolted bracket to the base. The aerial mast exits through the car skin in a rubber fitted sleeve. You say that you can hear the motor running but that the mast refuses to emerge. The beauty of Hirschmann is that their motor drive antenna assemblies are readily disassembled (and reassembled). You will need to take the mast assembly out of the vehicle; disconnect the wiring plug socket, remove the bracket bolt, earth strap and unscrew the coax cable connector. Pull the mast firmly down and out of the body work sleeve. The outer aerial mast is driven up by a toothed plastic flexible inner rod normally stored in a coil within the motor assembly. Remove the torx screw in the middle of the rounded end and separate the two halves. At the top is the electric motor set horizontally which drives a rubber belt to a helical drive immediately below it lying parallel. If this belt is broken this would give rise to the motor running but not engaging . The helical drive engages with the edge of the storage drum feeding out and retrieving the coiled rod to raise and lower the antenna. If the helical drive or the drum edge has missing teeth then the aerial cannot function. All these components can be be bought from Hirschmann spares or through your Mercedes dealer.

I have a 1995 toyota camry and my electric attenna broke when going through the car wash as it dosn't go down when car is off and has to be done manually. I want to switch to a manual attenna and remove...

If you want to put a manual antenna in the same position, it is quite an easy job. The original one is held on to the body with a nut at the base of the aerial. Undo that and there is often a bolt holding the motor in place as well. Remove the power cable and disconnect the aerial lead. You can now pull the old unit out. The new one slips in using the same hole. Before you assemble it, make sure tha body around the hole is clean and rust free, or you will have poor reception. Reconnect the aerial lead and tighten the nut and the job is done.
