1998 dodge dakota overheated was ran hot lost all power an shutdown

When an engine gets hot, you must shut it off before it gets so hot that it begins to lose power. Sometimes this simply can't be done safely. Once the engine gets so hot that it shuts down, permanent damage may have be done. Bearing can gall, piston rings can break, piston crowns melt, but usually the oil breaks down and the main damage is to bearings and perhaps the crankshaft. Diagnostics would include changing the oil, attaching a good mechanical oil pressure gauge then spin the engine with the spark plugs removed to see how bad the damage is. If oil pressure is adequate, run a compression test. This should give you enough information to decide if the engine can be saved without a major overhaul. Low compression can mean blown head gaskets, warpped heads, broken piston rings, warpped valves, etc.

How much are piston ring replacements for 1997 dodge neon? makes fast tapping noise which smooths out when acceleraste, but blows white smoke out----mechanic says piston rings need replacing

This would not be just rings. Rings do not tap, and rings do not make white smoke. Rings make smoke that is often described as blue, even though it also has some white.

White smoke, on the other hand, usually is a LOT. and quite visible and thick. Some say it smells sweet. This is coolant in the combustion chamber....

I sugges that the tapping be diagnosed, then decide what to do, as surgery may be too costly to make any sense.

A valve repair, and a head R&R and resurface, check for cracks, and put back on just MIGHT make sense to spend the $$ .

1993 dodge dakota burns oil and oil comes out the exhaust but the rings are not bad

How do you know the rings are not bad,or a piston is not cracked?Only other reason would be that the valve guides, and seals are bad,but hardly unlikely with it pouring out the tail pipe.

Well is the smoke coming out the exhaust BLUE or BLACK if Blue then its due to engine burning oil ..ie,,Piston rings /Valve seals etc etc
If Black then its fuel to much fuel going in engine and not being burnt.
So let me know more infomation and what colour smoke it is then we can get the problem sorted..
