While driving my Saturn Ion 2 sedan on city streets under 40mph as the wheels cross uneven pavement there a "clunk" sound and a noticeable abrupt feel. Do I need struts or shocks or is it just a Saturn Ion 2 thing?

It sounds like you need to replace the two bushings in the front. Cost of bushings should be under $20.00

Major clunk coming out of 4 wheel drive on the highway

Check to make sure all of your drive shaft U joints are in good condition. Unless you have a full time 4 wheel drive you shouldn't run on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive for very long as stress builds up in the drive system. 4 wheel drive is best for slippery roads/mud/ dirt conditions.

Why am i hearing a whistling noise coming from my front wheel?

It could be what is called the squeal warning on the front disc brake pads. If so, it indicates the pads are worn to the point that they should be replaced before they begin to do damage to the rotors. Pretty easy for someone who knows how to jack the car up, remove the wheel and take a look how much brake pad is left.

you need to find a mechanic and ask him to take a look at your rear wheel bearings, clicking is a sign one is failing, do both sides before either fails completely. and ask him to take a look at your serpentine belt tensioner, sounds like you may have an issue there also.

When I'm in 4 wd the front wheels feel like the brakes are being applied when I make a sharp turn. No problems when driving straight or in 2 wd.

It sounds like you are driving in 4wd drive on dry pavement. The front drive axles do not work like the rear differential. When you turn, the outside front wheel must travel farther than the inside wheel, therefore they are traveling through the turn at different speeds. If you are on dry pavement, this causes the gears to bind. You don't notice this on slick surfaces because the outside wheel will slip instead of bind up the gears. You should not use 4wd on dry pavement. That's the advantage of push button, or shift on the fly, 4wd. You can shift back to 2wd when you encounter dry pavement. All wheel drive vehicles don't have this problem because they have a limited slip front differential as opposed to a locking differential on 4wd. Hope I didn;t confuse you too much.

You car most certainly does use power steering fluid. I recommend you take the car to the closest Saturn or GM dealer. It may cost you a little more but you will get a warranty and know it is fixed right.

There are, you can go to Parts Source or any larger parts store and you can get different upgrade wheel bearings. The OEM is the best price the dealer can get for parts made, but that does not reflect on your cost for repairs. Good luck and hope this helps.

May be the locking hub. Do not drive this vehicle on dry pavement in four wheel drive.
