Had the same problem here with a car which was given to me. You need to buy a new electrical switch part of the ignition. Oreilly's has them for about $50. It is a **** poor design on Ford's part. Basically, what happens is that heat is generated in the contacts of the switch which in part melts a little plastic push rod. When the plastic pushrod is melted, the contact makes contact all the time, thus causing the starting circuit to be energized all the time. Since the circuit is energized but interlocked with the clutch safety switch, whenever you push the clutch in, the safety switch is made, thereby engaging the starter.

What you will need to do is remove the plastic around the steering wheel and revome the electrical switch which is mated to the ignition switch. There is one screw on the driver's side of the steering column which you will need to remove to accomplish this. Not a bad job at all and not much $$$ to repair either.

Engine revs but no acceleration

Clutch plate and pressure plate seem to be too weak to pull the car. Or one of the CV joints is detached from the gear box. To test the clutch plate, park the car on flat surface. Pull the hand brake up, start the car, depress the foot brake pedal, depress the clutch pedal, put the car in 1st gear, press the gas pedal and leave the clutch pedal at once, while keeping the brake pedal depressed.
Follow one of the two following statements:
1. Engine does not shut down and remain start. (Clutch plate, pressure plate and clutch bearing defective - Replace all as a set)
2. Engine shuts down. (Clutch system is OK and does not require any repair).

91 ford escort gt wont go in gear

If you mean the clutch master cylinder, you could have air in the line, or a faulty cylinder. The clutch hydraulic system works the same way the brakes do, it uses fluid pressure to push on the slave cylinder in the transmission housing.

Your absolutely rite that is a safety feature! so the car will not take off in gear if you forget to put clutch down to disengage it so no one will get ran over! maybe your natural safety switch is gone! or the starter motor.
