2004 A4 Tail Light replacement.

I need to replace the Passenger Tail Light and the Manual doesn't (of Course it wouldn't be of any assistance) include any info for replacing bulbs. How do you access the Rear Light Box ?

The carpet in the trunk is fixed using a structural mold. It doesn't seem like it is set up that way. VW has a strange way of over-engineering things.

Initially, I attempted that. But quickly found the mold had NO flexibility.

    Thanks Though.

If you are still looking for the resolution, it's really pretty simple. It is highly recommended that you remove one light assembly at a time, thus allowing you to have a good guide when repositioning the assembly back on the vehicle body. Yes, the only way to get to the burned out bulb in the taillight is to remove the whole darn thing! The bulb burns out every 4-5 months, so I have become good at it...Here goes:

1. Open trunk. Look for small (3" diameter) cutouts in the fabric panel in the trunk liner. They are identical and appear next to the taillight assemblies, on the side, not behind the taillight.
2. Gently use a flat blade screwdriver and pry them open. These cutouts are attached to the inner trunk liner fabric, so be gentle.
3. Notice the phillips head screw inside the opening. Unscrew it slowly, making sure it doesn't drop between the chassis and the trunk liner. Remove the screw.
4. Place soft towel on the outside of the car under the taillight assembly, to prevent scratching the car bumper.
5. Gently grab both sides of the taillight assembly from the outside and pull away from the car (rear direction. Be careful not to pull too hard, or the wiring harness behind the assembly may break.
6. You can now access all lamp in the taillight assembly. Change the bulbs as needed. Also, if you can vacuum or clean the dirt on the chassis as well as on the back side of the taillight assembly, you'll feel better later :-)
7. Placing the taillight assembly back in its place is a bit tricky. It seems to go back easily, but the rubber lining nearest to the trunk opening and where the phillips head screw is, must be placed exactly right or water will leak behind the assembly.
8. Screw in the phillips head screw, but don't overtighten it. You will need to open it every 4-5 months to replace another bulb (its an Audi-VW plan to sell more bulbs).
9. Snap the trunk liner caps back in place and voila, you have done it.

There is a small circle cut-out inside the truck adjacent to the tail light assembly. Open this, you will see a screw. take this screw completely out and then softly pull the tail light assembly from the car. once is loose the rest is prett simple.

You should be able to pull the fabric in the trunk away from the rear of the car and have access to the light from inside the trunk. From there you should be able to pull the old light bulb out and replace it. Let me know if you have any questions or get stuck

I am an American guy myself not owning any foreign cars but I guess they engineered it a little more complex like you said. Anyway

woops sorry, I was going to post a link for an audi avant with pictures since it will be somewhat similar to what you will have to do

Basically you are going to have some plastic covers to pull off which will give you access to the light. You then unscrew the bolts holding the light on and the light pulls out the back of the car. If you are still having trouble figuring this out, let me know.

2004 Audi A4 headlight replacement

you have to loosen the whole headlight assembly to open the covers behind the lights to actually get to the bulbs. 4 screws, 2 are on the top of the assembly(phillips screws) the other two are hex and attach the bottom of the assembly to the car. somewhat difficult to see but look behind the assembly and down into the compartment and loosen the screws(they don't fully come out) just enough to pull the assembly out. open the black cover behind he low bean and there is the bulb

Cold Weather causing the Left Rear Brake light to come on

That's the most interesting problem I've heard all week. I'm pretty sure this has to be problem in the switch that operates the light. Are you positive it's the brake light and not just the tail light? Tail light switch is part of the headlight switch. If you're sure it's the brake light, replace the switch under the brake pedal arm, under your dash. I think this is the problem because unless the circuit is engaged at these switches, it's impossible to activate them from anywhere else. Brake switch is easy. You can do it your self. Headlight switch usually involves removing the steering wheel and is kind of a pain but not too overwhelming.

More than likely you will need to remove the entire tail light assembly from the inside of the trunk. You should see some twist knobs under the trunk liner or exposed.
