Okay well the black soot means you are running really rich. I would suggest giving the car a tune up. If that didn't work i would start checking engine sensors and vacuum hoses.

Might be that the spark plugs need to be replaced.

1992 Eagle Talon 2.0L DOHC Overheating

If the hose to the thermostat is missing then there is no coolant in the engine ! Check the engine oil. If milky whhite, walk away as its likely the head gasket leaks or the cyl head is warped.
If coolant is present, the thermostat may be stuck closed (rare, but corrosion in the coolant over time can do this). This can cause over heating.
Thermostat & hoses are relatively easy and low cost to fix. The cylinder head gasket isn't so easy or cheap.

Starts but dies when engine warms up

Ok, i have a 93 mitsubishi eclipse, so same motor as mine. I had a similar problem after replacing my battery. In removing the intake tube, it split for about 3 inches on the underside of the tube, allowing air to bypass the air intake sensor ( the place where the tube connects to the filter housing). Check this and let me know :)

My 1992 Eagle Talon TSi

it is low oil pressure. Mine did the same thing until I switched to 10-w40 motor oil. the thicker oil makes up for the wear in the oil pump. If that doesn.t work, then probably bad pump or main bearing. The main bearing helps regulate oil pressure too
