You don't say what engine type you have, but most came with a 4 cyl DOHC engine. Did this problem come on suddenly? Does the vehicle have more than 60K miles on it? If so, a first guess might be that your timing belt has stripped a tooth and jumped time. This would mess up compression and starting. It could also have added problem of bending valves if the timing has shifted too much. Without more info, I cannot venture any further guesses.
If its a 4 cyl, its right below the computer on the driver side when you open the hood. Just behind the radiator. It attaches to the transmission bellhousing. On a V6, not sure but probably close to 4 cyl location. Not too bad to replace on a 4.
The thermostat is located at the upper radiator hose end of the engine. The hose will connect to a housing that will have to be removed in order to change the thermostat.
While you have the thermostat housing removed, make sure you flush the old coolant out and replace with new.
