Marcy1708, To answer your question, Yes it is possible. You don't state here why the timing belt was being replace. Is this for regular scheduled maintenance or did the timing belt break and need to be replaced? If the belt broke then it is possibe that a few valves got bent from the pistons hitting them. This happens on what is call an interference engine. What happens is, when the belt breaks some of the valves stay in the open position and the travel of the piston will hit and bend them. A good way of testing this is to do a cylinder compression test after the timing belt is put back on. The pressure in each cylinder should be within 10 percent of each other. If you have one or more cylinders that have no pressure then the valve are bent and will not close. The cylinder heads can be replaced but unfortunately the pistons in the affected cylinders may have to be replaced as well. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if the valves are bent then the engine needs to be replaced. If the cylinder compression test comes out good then you will have to make sure that the timing marks are lined up properly and go from there. Good luck with this.

Yes the belt broke out of no where when i was going up a hill, so we put the timing belt on and it started but the only way to keep it running was to hold the gas pedal down but it back fired and didnt sound right.. so we tried again and it still the same.

marcy1708, By your discriptionof how the motor reacted tells me that there is a chance that the motor isn't blown. Try and reset the belt once again making sure that the number one cylinder is at TDC (Top dead center) and you timing marks are all lined up properly. When you have the belt put back into position, manually turn the engine crankshaft two complete turns until it returns to the original timing mark and see if all your timing marks are still OK. If they are off them you have to start over, but if they all return to being lined up properly then the belt is on properly and you can go from there. If it still run rough and backfires then the valves are most likely bent. Good luck with this.

Good Morning, I have an '02 Subaru Outback j25 motor. I replaced the water pump & timing belt. Lined up the marks & lines. Reassembled the rest. Now it turns over but doesn't start?

Sorry for late response.. like months !
well hope you were able to suvive this situation

an item for water pump replacement is resetting timing belt which also inches a hydraulic tensioner... just double that that happened otherwise the markets which may have appeared lined up are not when under tension and running

if you are going to redo this operation please use new components parts ... google deluxe timing belt replacement and there will be the package list which includes sprockets, tensioner, etc... it is worth to replace as a set. Even if you are going to sell..pay it forward to the next Subie family member.

2000 subaru outback 2.5 L engine problems

you need to pull the timing covers to see if it has a broken timing belt and find out for sure if it is an interferance engine, could be a good deal if it just needs T-belt.

Having trouble lining up timing marks. got camshafts lined up crankshaft will not come to 12oclock stuck at 11 oclock

the pistons are hitting the valves. your timing is not set correctly. the timing is too involved to tell here, but Subaru timing belts are not set up on TDC. I donrt know what engine you have?http://www.subaru.com/content/downloads/pdf/spt/STi_PERFORMANCE_TIMING_BELT.pdf

I need to know how to do the timing but i cant get the outer crank shaft pully off is there any markings on the outer pully i could use?

You never have to take the outer pulley off unless you are doing a timing chain.
But I am a little confused because it appears some Subarus use a chain and some use a belt.
And ignition timing seems totally opaque unless you have the equipment to do it electronically:

Timing belt broke and need timing marks diagram 2.2 subaru

the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong

I have a Subaru 2001 2.5L SHO and when aligning all timing marks the engine seem to not want to rotate....feals like it might be toughting piston to valves.

it sounds like your crank timing is 180 degrees out you need to take the belt off and turn the crank 180 and realine timing marks then refit the belt hope that helps

all marks need to be aligned to 12 o'clock driver cam should align with notch in cover, crank sprocket also at 12 o'clock there is a straight line on reluctor of crank gear ,this line matches a notch on the oil pump where the crank sensor fits, right cam at 12 line should match camcase where it meets cylinder head
