Have 6 volts at coil but only .5 volts coming out not hot enoughto make spark (1985 318)

What is the hot side of the coil so I can hot wire to see if I can get spark also to check to see if coil still is goood

The wire that goes to the distributor is the ground side of the coil. The other side is the positive side. Be careful if you plan to connect 12 volts to this terminal on the car, as most cars have a ballast resistor between the 12 volts and the positive of the coil. If you connect 12 volts directly to the coil you may burn out the coil. You are better to use a multimeter to check the coil as that will not damage it.

No ignition spark when hot

problem in the ignition control module or coil
replace the coil with a suitable voltage rating( some are straight 12 volts and some are 12 volts start 7.5 volts run
it is an overheating electronic component that is causing the fault

87 Toyota p/u 4x4 turns over won't start no spark at coil coil has 12 volts on both wires why is this should I have 12 volts on wires going to pickup in the distributor if so which wires should be hot???

12 volts at the low tension wire , hundreds at HT (high tension ) leads , they go to each plug, dont try testing them with a volt meter you will blow it up , and your hand as well,take one plug out , put the ht lead on it rest plug against the engine block , get someone to crank engine and watch plug to make sure you have a good spark, if not change the ign coil/s

Do you have a spare coil to test? Coils can be a failure point as well.

When my ignition coil is very hot is hard to start what is the problem

hot coils tend to short out internally and have problems creating the flux needed for a hot spark. Check the voltage of the coil and if it is 12 volts resistance and your system is straight 12 volts then that will be why the coil is getting hot.

I have a 1990 f-150 with a 300 straight 6 cylinder. I am getting voltage from battery to coil but no spark coming from it. I have replaced it and distributor also and still no spark. anyone got any ideas?

Replace the coil and ensure that you get the correct coil voltage for the vehicle Coils come in to voltages Straight 12 volt coils that start and run on 12 volts and other that start on 12 volt and run on 7 volts. Check if it needs a resister with it.

Random misfire/distributor problems

IF you have a seperate coil (1 coil only) check for correct voltage for the coil as most start on 12 volts and run on 7 volts and have a resistor in the circuit. Randomj misfire may be the coil breaking down as it gets too hot from the incorrect voltage

This engine uses a special flat cap and a standard rotor, right ? The spark comes into the cap and thru the rotor, then to the spark plugs.
Have you replaced the rotor ?
The spark can jump thru the rotor and ground thru the dist. shaft.
Depending on where you are testing for spark, the coil could also be weak and not pushing the spark to the plugs.

My 200 1500 with 4.6 wont get spark checked cps its fine put in a new coil and pickup still no spark

Check wire feeding for the file should be 12 volts is received

Measure the ohms on the secondary winding wire 2 - 3 or 1-4

Color sparks out of the blue wire coil

1998 Ford Explorer, 4.0 SOHC No Spark. Engine will crank but it won't start. Replaced the Crankshaft Sensor, Coil Pack, & Spark Plugs. Still no spark. What next?

You are at thhe right trail what controls spark is coil pack crank sensor sparkplugs and plug wire but the most important is power . I mean 12 volt connections and ground This includes checking fuses you need a simple volt meter doesnt have to expensive or fancy just to pick up 12 volts let start with fuses in the engine juction box (there not mark to what it belongs to) make sure none are open. especially fuse 19 and 24 , next go to the crank sensor make sure the tabs are snuggly on now to the coil pack there is a red and light green wire this comes from ignition and feeds 12 volts at the coil pack measure that voltage is it 12 volts if not correct it this is from ignition switch ( you can make a tool that feed 12 volt with a wire and a fuse in series and attatch it to battery and the primary wire this is known as hot wire) next go to the ECM wiggle the wires see if that get a connection going if not go back to the ICM here are the wire you are to measure the tan light green, this is from ECM and it is pulsed it measure 5vlts to 0 volts switched then measure the tan orange the same thing 5 volts to zero,then tan white again 5vlts to zero. any one of these 5 to zero fails you fix is the ecm
