Best way is to remove the 4 AC compressor bolts to slide the compresser forward so you can get your hand behind the alternator to put the pin in

Year-old battery dead. Jump started fine, but security light stayed on solid while driving. Shut car off & battery dead again.

Sounds like there's a problem in the charging system. It could be as simple as a loose fanbelt, or as major as a bad alternator. I have a very similar car, 2004 Infiniti I35, same engine/alternator, and my alternator went bad in November. Replacement is a pain, the book calls for removal of the AC compressor, though my mechanic pulled the radiator instead.

How do i replace my alternator in my 2004 nissan maxima?

Basically first check battery voltage under load with headlights, fan etc on and give about 2500 rpm and check battery voltage with digital meter and expect to see about 12 volt range if Alternator faulty. If ok would be 14 volts approx.
Assuming battery voltage low. First remove negative battery terminal and proceed to take of drive belt by taking strain of belt by slackening tensioner on belt then remove and check belt for cracks etc on inside once removed. if damaged replace. Proceed and remove cowls, bolts etc as required to remove alternator. Before removing disconnect wires on Alternator. Assemble in reverse to above. Just a basic outline of how to do it.

How to tighten belt on 2004 nissan quest

Best to remove the front passenger side wheel. Then snap out the clips that are holding the plastic cover towards the front. Now it will expose the belt area. Loosen the locking nut of the tensioner(idler) pulley located to the right of the Crankshaft Pulley. Crankshaft pulley is the one that handles both belts (alternator and the power sterring pump). Right to that next to it, upwards is the idler pulley. You will find the alternator pulley to the right of that further up. Open the hood of the van and locate the adjusting nut behind the alternator on the idler pulley from top and loosen that as well. Once both these are loosened, belt will loosen and will be easy to remove. Now replace it with the new belt the same way it was wrapped. Go over the crankshaft pulley; under the A/C compressor pulley; over the alternator pulley; under the idler pulley. tighten the adjusting nut from the top through the hood until the play on the belt (when pressed in) is less than 1 inch. Now lock the tensioner pulley by tightening the locking nut. Start and run the car for 15 mins to see if everything is ok.

Timing belt on 1990 nissan maxma

Very dangerous to have the cam out of time, many engines will be destroyed. The pistons and valves can both end up in the same space and this really kills an engine. I hope you didn't try to start it with the belt improperly installed; it may be too late. Most engines can tolerate a slippage of two teeth but going beyond that is dangerous.   You should have had an aftermarket manual such as Haynes or Chilton that has very good instructions on how to avoid trashing your car.
