Ford F100 Fuel System

I have a 1972 Ford F-100 with a 302 engine that my young son is attempting to get running again.
There’s no fuel at the carb. It will run only as long as I drop enough fuel directly into the carb.

  1. The fuel filter is not blocked.
  2. The fuel lines are not plugged.
  3. I can manually pump the fuel pump and it works.

How does the pump “****” the fuel out of the tank? The gas tank is behind the seat and the suction tube in on top of the tank. Could a leaking gas cap allow too much air in the tank so that the fuel pump only pumps air? Does the fuel suction line attached to a “dip” tube in the tank that might be plugged? We haven’t pulled the gas tank out yet to clean it out/check for sludge, etc.

Thanks for you help.

There are a couple things here. In the first place if you can pump fuel with the pump off the engine and pumped by hand doesn't mean that it will pump on the engine. See the stroke on the engine is very short, it only moves like 1/4 inch. So you could have a bad pump even though you are pumping by hand. The gas cap, will have no effect on this model. Yes the pick-up tube has a filter on the bottom of it, and it could be stopped up. You can remove this unit up through the top of the tank, got to wiggle it and turn it sideways, and if you can find a used one( New ones scarce and expensive) by going to used parts place, and look for 1967 - 1972, they are all alike. Lots a luck in fixing this great ole truck.

Oh yes when looking for the tank unit, you are looking for fuel tank sending unit. It is all one assembly.

How hard was it to pump it by hand?Iwould be suprised if a mechanical fuel pump could be easily pumped by hand as the spring pressure required to hold the arm against the eccentric is considerable If its a cleveland or windsor you cannot pump by hand.I own a 1980 running a cleveland and found that if you put an electric pump as close to the fuel tank as possible and have a good original mechanical pump fuel delivery is no longer a problem.I had to do this as soon as i went to a 600 holley as the original pump was not able to supply sufficient flow.the electric pump doesnt have to be an expensive hi volume type,it only has to help to get fuel to the mechanicl pump

My1980 ford f150inline 6 wont run just trun oververy good

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, check fuel system. If this is a carbed engine, usually the fuel pressure isn't very high. You can take fuel line loose from carb, aim into container, bump the starter a few times, see if gas comes out. If nothing comes out, check fuel pump and fuel lines.
5--7 psi is fuel pressure spec I've seen for 6 cylinder 1980 ford, carbed engine.

2012 ford focus stopped running while idling, wont restart without putting fuel in the carburator then stops again. what could be th cause?

The fact that it runs with fuel introduced through the throttle body indicates that you have air, compression, and spark. The only thing you are missing is fuel. The primary culprit would be the fuel pump. However, the vehicle seems a bit young for this problem. But the other items are obscure as well. All the injectors would have to faulty to blame them. The PCM is also a possibility, but unlikely. There may be one or two relays that affect the fuel delivery system that you can check and possibly replace.

I have a 1981 F100 Big 6 truck that will not

If your smelling alot of fuel without using the pedal at all the floats are most likely stuck open in the carb. Which will cause it to flood out. I would check for spark first the go from there.

Yesterday i went trough a puddle a little to deep now my engine is shaking bad and it wont accelerte

Sounds like water got into the fuel system, try some fuel system cleaner in the gas tank, you may have to drain the gas out of the tank and refill with new gas

Deisal out of gas wont start

The fuel system has a bleeder located on the engine, located near the passenger side front of the engine. Open the bleeder, turn the engine over until you can see fuel come out on the ground near the front of the engine. Close the bleeder, attempt to restart the engine. It may take a couple of tries, but it should start after five or six attempts. Do not run the starter for more than twenty seconds per attempt, with at least one minute between attempts.

Ford F100 Truck Fuel Pump

Hi,

To my knowledge, most Ford models of this year uses a mechanical (diaphragm type) fuel pump not electrical. However, it is possible to install an aftermarket electric fuel pump in lieu of the mechanical pump. If this was done to your Ford F 100, it would either be either near the carbs or the fuel tank, follow the fuel line.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
