Serpentine belt doesn't seem to fit

My 1992 Audi 100 V6 shredded its serpentine belt. I got a new one from Napa which is too long no matter how I attempt to thread it. (It's 2273 mm long.) It appears that an idler pulley is missing... There's only one pulley but my owner's manual shows two. It doesn't appear that anything has fallen off, though.

How many idlers should this thing have?

Not quite sure how many idlers it should have, but does your car have A/C? Serpentine belts for any car that have the A/C option are sold in two different lengths, the A/C one being longer. If this is not the case, ask your NAPA parts person for the routing diagram for your vehicle. Having worked for them in the past, I know for a fact they have easy access to them. Sometimes with serpentine belts, even experienced mechanics get confused and can`t reroute it right without a diagram.

My audi a5 wont run it starts and cuts out since i fitted a new serpentine belt

How long does it run? Sure you only changed the serpentine belt? The car would actual even run without the serpentine (or also called accessory belt) since the belt only drives fairly non essential components (AC compressor, alternator, fan, power steering pump. etc).

Replace serpentine belt on 1992 dodge grand

Click on the following free direct Link.
It has the correct Belt Diagrams for your 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan wirh either the 3.0L SOHC V6 or the 3.3L V6.

Included on the Diagrams are the Instructions on "Rotating" the Automatic Tensioner. See Below for additional Instructions to make your job easier.

"HOW TO": I professionally prefer the Serpentine Tensioner Tool.
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s).
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (located on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening located on the Tensioner Arm) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner...

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.
