Look for a broken flex pipe(flexible section of pipe between down pipe and tail pipe section) or hole in the exhaust in the engine bay area. The are often hard to see and may have to be taken apart to locate.

Muffler leaking

Exhaust system has flexibility. When car is in reverse there is an opposite strain form the motor in relation to the exhaust system. A donut or join is opening and causing exhaust to leak out. Your exhaust also has a flex pipe to absorb movement between the engine and exhaust. This may be damaged from being "over flexed"

Ran over a large rock creating a hole on a braided section(expansion joint?) of my exhaust manifold piping to front exhaust piping on my 1994 Trooper S. What is this braided section called and can it be...

Thats the flex pipe probably attached to your converter. This type of pipe is used because of how the engine sits in the engine compartment and is used to reduce stress on the exhaust system. This can be done at home but it requires wielding skills. The piece you need is the flex joint. If you have not done this before I might recommend you have some assistance with it. With the Downpipe, Flexpipe and Catalytic Converter all being one piece and only needing the flex joint it will take two or three hours.

Exhaust Flex Pipe; How to replace?

You can change the entire section of exhaust pipe that the flex pipe is in. It's usually bolted to the catalytic converter, on the back end, and to the exhaust manifold at the front end. It's just a matter of unbolting it and bolting on the new section of exhaust with new gaskets. You could also go to a muffler shop and have them cut out the old flex pipe and weld in a new piece of flex pipe in it's place. It's for you to decide which option is best for you, and for your wallet.

1996 Nissan Maxima exhaust replacements

Yes you can obtain the parts from after market. The Flex Pipe is installed on all cars hows engine is built in transverse. if you accelerate the engine tries to turn against the crankshaft rotation. W/o flex pipe your exhaust will be broken after a couple of minutes. The flex pipe acts like an accordion and eliminates this small "turns".

Hard time finding part for '98 Jetta Exhaust

its called a flex pipe most exhaust shops use a universial fit that are relativly inexpensive for the part. im not sure on the labor. have your technican check the motor mounts next time in. a flex pipe is to allow for a small amout of enine movement to much will cause the part to fail premature.

Exhaust leak near drivers side door

This is a flex pipe and VERY expensive to purchase from the dealership("Y" pipe). Just go to midas or the local mechanic and have them use a universal joint. Won last as long and may crack later leaving you with exhaust noise, but nothing more depending on the size of the crack.
Mine is hanging in there since March 08...
