There is a TSB for this. The dealer should fix it for free. I had this problem and they fixed it. Then a year later it came back. They released another TSB for a different fix, I had it fixed again and have not had any problems since.

Motor knocks, sounds like lifter , at startup??

I bought a new silverado in 2001 and took it to 3 differnt chevy dealers for the same thing and got the same answer from all they claim its a cold start knock one said it had somthing to do with wrist pins they used and said it was normal and i told him that im not ASE certified but have built a few motors of my own and when it knocks that aint normal but he said it was nothing to worry about and so far mine has knocked since it was new with no problems yet.

I need to know how to get to the blend door in the heater area of my '92 chevy c1500. I was told that is what makes a thumping noise when the key is on or off.

this is some what normal, as long as it just once that you hear the noise (ie. you turn the truck on and thump, turn the truck of and thump) the doors operate off of vacuum lines in the engine. When you shut the engine off the vacuum goes away and *thump* the blend door snaps back to its normal resting position. then when you turn the truck on the vacuum then comes back and *thump* the door snaps back to its adjusted place.

If you feel that this is not what is going on, this diagnostic technique can help eliminate this condition
set the blend door to the hot side and start the truck and it should thump when the engine is on or off.
if you didn't get a thumping noise that is good it just means that the blend door is set to the hot side normally open.

Knocking in front end when steering

my 05 silverado does the same thing it seems to be a common problem in the later series i found that having the steering shaft repact helps for a while but isn't a permenant fix. My chevy dealer said that GM was looking into a more permenant solution

1988 chev silverado- when i put it in gear, with the brake on i get a thumping sound from engine. it nearly stalls and the truck seems to want to lurch forward.

a thumping sound could be a rod knocking when the moter is under a load it caused by worn out rod bearings or main brearings. doing such a repair often reguires removing the engine and rebuilding the moter.

Steering wheel

What kind of noise, if growling and grinding check and replace wheel bearing. If thumping clunking type noise check steering intermediate shaft, makes noise in both directions.

No its not serious ! You need to replace the center section on your steering column . Not that expensive and only takes about thirty minutes .

Knocking noise

If the knocking sound is coming from the steering wheel area itself, then I believe it's the nylon bushing in the steering colum. My friend had the same problem with his truck. The other trucks we work on at the shop seem to have this common problem.

If it's sounds like its outside the truck, have the tie rod ends checked out.
