Question about 1987 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

1987 Prelude weird slip issues.

Hi there,
I have an '87 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si (Standard transmission), I took it to the shop to get the CV boot done, took it home and heard a "Pop" sound when i turned in the a sharp corner. Shortly after drove fine for a little while till i turned a corner in a parking lot and suddenly the car stopped moving.
Now the car will move back and forth but once you turn the wheel it slips back out. So my question is, what can be causing this problem?

The axle isn't seated all the way into the transmission.Inside the transmission is the differential, the axle goes into a side gear, called a spider gear, and slips into splines inside the spider gear.Once in to a certain point, there is a retainer clip on the end of the axle that pops out when seated all the way into the spider gear in the trans, and this holds,or retains the axle in the trans. If whoever worked on the car didn't have the axle fully seated to where the clip popped out, then the axle will eventually slide back out of the trans, disengaging the splines, and causing the vehicle to not move.Good luck.

for an 87 I can imagine that you are probably running it at between 175K-350K miles so you should be getting

Castrol/1 qt. SAE 5W-30 GTX superior sludge protection motor oil

Part Number:
12082

it sounds like you want a "power probe" . It's the best way to test continuity. A little pricey, though.
