My wife and I was moving from NY to SC and on the way the car quit while driving. The car started again about 5 minutes later and she was able to drive it a mile farther to where we had pulled over to see what was taking her. It was running for about another 2-3 minutes after pulling over and then quit again. I have tried to start the car a few times after it happened and a few times recently since towing it the rest of the way and it just turns over. I do get the smell of gas so i don't believe it's the fuel injection system. Once on the 9interstate i used a screw driver in the end of one of the spark plug wires and i think i heard it spark but unsure do to the amount of noise as the cars went by.
Fuel pump failure is most likely the culprit. Take it to a shop to be sure.
ign coils do not commonly just stop putting out juice but i guess there is always an exception. check your fuses and make sure a fuse just didn't decide to pop.
The infrequency and it starting after "cooling" down does indicate a fuel pump failure, since once the pump "warms" up it seizes, and when it cools down it works again. This is common, however it's not an easy/cheap repair unfortunately.
