93 Magna exec (think this is same as the Gallant) The revs drop off when stationary only when car is warm.

  • misspeach75 Aug 10, 2008

93 magna exec, revs drop off when car is stationary. Revs at 500 usually no prob, recently they drop off when the car has reached right temperature. Been told the timing chain needs replacing, is that relevant to this prob? How much you reckon 2 fix?

You need to get yourself a repair manual for your car, you can buy one at any parts store for around $20.00. And it will give you ideas on what to check, I like Haynes the best for manuals. If the timing belt or chain I am not sure what they are in newer cars. The car recently they drop off when the car has reached right temperature. You say the revs drop off when car is stationary. That sounds like a timing chain to me. But yet that manual would give you other ideas to check. It might be the computer, a bad sensor someplace well heck that is the problem it could be anything. So try the timing belt or chain; get that manual and check things out for yourself. Or else take it well pull it to a shop; they will get to the bottom of things for you. I wish I could be more help to you, hope this helps and good luck!

If it is an automatic trans this can happen because of a faulty throttle position sensor. If it is manual it is just faulty transmission.

I have a 2001 gallant es and when am in drive and am stopped at a red light it states to vibrate but when am driving it stops, When I drop it in neutral it stops I've done a tune but it didn't fix it

might be your engine idle is low and is slowed even more by the torque convertor when stationary. In neutra there is no drag on the torque convertor and idle is allowed to stay faster hence no vibration

Hi Josh, The engine check light can come on for a number of different reasons and will not always mean the vehicle comes to a stand still immediately. My advise is tohave a scan carried out to find out why it has come on, and then have it attended to before you're forced to take the long walk home. Regards John

Why does my rev counter stop working after being stationary for a while, but works after 10 or so minutes of driving?

You have a bad connection somehwere. Once the car becomes warmed up the connection is established and the rev counter works. Check for loose connections in the engine bay.
