I am trying to replace the left rear turn signal light bulb. i took off the 2 screws in the trunk but can't see what to do next. it says to take off the wing nut. help.
If it's a Malibu Maxx, there will be no wingnut to take off. Just unscrew the the two screws you can see (and that the book tells you) and pull back. The entire piece comes out - so be prepared for that.
Mine stuck a little on the bottom but after wiggling a bit - I grabbed the part that the screws came out of and it came out REALLY easy. It's the middle bulb. When done - just put it back in place and line the screws up.
This is the first time that I've ever had to remove the entire piece like you have to do on the Maxx - but once you get past that and the worry about breaking it - you'll be fine.

on my 2005 lsve after I removed the wing nuts that were under the trunk liner (see previouse guest post for instructions) i pulled the light assembly off. you have to make sure that the screw post threads are not catching in the holes that they are pushed through. the holes are not very big and you may have to play with it a little bit but is should pull strait out paralel to the ground.
I just replaced mine last night -
1 - remove the screws (mine only had one)
2 - unscrew the top cargo net holder (black knob)
3 - pull back the felt trunk liner
4 - remove the two wing nuts that are reveled behind the felt
5 - work the taillight assembly off (mine pulled strait out).
hope this helps you
If your car has netting on the sides - the black nut that holds the netting unscrews (this is the wing nut)
If there is a wingnut there it will turn counterclockwise to remove the wingnut a pair of pliars helps out a great deal here just be carefull and dont twist too hard it will come off ok
good luck
Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)
1. Make sure the headlamp control
is in the OFF position and then
open the hatchback.
2. From inside the luggage
compartment remove the wing nut
of the rear light assembly cover.
3. Using a Phillips screw driver
remove the screw. The lamp is still
retained by a spring loaded clip.
Remove by gently pulling out the
light housing.
4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it
out.
5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
Install in reverse order.

there is no wing nut to take off.
There IS no plastic wingnut other than the first two big ones. pulling back on the metal housing doesn't budge. pulling plastic housing from outside doesn't come out. Anyone else have an idea? I see no other screws to remove.
