I own a 1983 Ford 350 Econoline C-class Motorhome with a blown 460 engine. I would like to replace that engine with a laterl model 460 with fuel injection. Through my research I decovered that the 1994 through 1997 was the final series for this motor. Will this engine fit into the 83 body without extreme motification? I am aware that a different wiring harness will need to be used.

this is hard to diagnose without hearing it but its either the timing chain or wrist pin on a piston

Check and see if the pulleys are shiny looking, also are the batteries low on charge, if you have more than one battery the load on the alt is huge, add in a low or bad set of batteries and then the belt can deliver enough power to spin the alternator, and it slips. Worked on motorhomes for year's, saw this allot.

I had same problem in varius trucks and motorhomes with the same engine size (460)and this is caused by excesive heat from the engine in all 460's,when hot if I stoped at a gas station to fill,once I tryed to start it again it felt like the battery was almost dead and bearly turned the engine over.what I did was that I added an after market engine oil cooler and that fixed the problem.
