Heads up display

The heads up display on my '04 GTP is working, but not projecting onto the windshield. Can I fix this, or do I need to take it to a dealership? It's not the fuse.

same problem with same year and model. Is pontiac doing anything to correct?

When I look down at the HUD mirror through the windshield, I can see that a spring has become disconnected as it is just sitting next to the mirror assembly. I may pull apart the dash and fix it myself...

I have the same problem with my 2004 Grand Prix GTP Competition Series. I can see the spring loose in the heads up if I look from outside the windshield. However, I am female with no experience in taking my dash a part to fix it. Lou Sohb Pontiac in Conyers, GA claims It will cost over $500.00 to replace. I found out later from one of their mechanics that they send that stuff out and could not repair it themselves. He was suggesting I find another place. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same problem in my 2004 Grand Prix.

mine had this happen to it recently as well...how much of a pain is it to take apart the dash to get at it? looks like u only have to take out the cluster to get at it from behind?

  • shef_dust Nov 03, 2008

Mine was working fine until a few weeks ago. Thought it was just a fuse or bulb out but checked the fuses and they are good. After googling the problem discovered the spring issue and surprise surprise that is what's wrong. Has anyone fixed this themselves by taking apart their dash?

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GTP and is having the same problem HUD works can see it if I look down into it from the outside of the car. I have read alot and everyone says you have to get into the dash. If some one knows someone whom can repair cheat. I would like to meet them.

Had the exact same problem in 2005 (car was only a year old)....believe or not i was able to fix the problem without removing anything from the dash except the clear plastic shield that prevents debris from falling into the HUD compartment...I did it very, very carefully so as not to damage it.....I then had a buddy look in from outside while i "Blindly" reconnected the spring with his verbal guidance....it was a real pain...but we got it done...without spending $500.00 too!!! Dealership technicians will tell you anything to get in to the shop...they are in the business of making a ton of money AT YOUR EXPENSE!!!...whatever happen to good old fashion troubleshooting, and thinking outside the box??

I'm having the same problem with my 2004 GP.
I'm glad I googled this..
I'll see if I can try and fix this myself...
With so many people having the issue you would think that they would recall.

What does the HUD button perform?

Your windshield serves as a giant screen, and a projector embedded in the dashboard sends a transparent image onto it. The image leaves the projector and bounces off a series of mirrors, magnifying and flipping the image so that the data comes out right-side up and legible. Press a toggle switch by the dashboard and you can adjust where the display is on your windshield-something accomplished with a rotating mirror.
Some car companies like Mazda project their heads-up data onto a small plastic window that flips up, known as a combiner. This creates a uniform image no matter how the windshield's shaped. It also reduces the number of mirrors needed to send the image onto the windshield clearly. And a lot of aftermarket displays use such a combiner so you can install it in nearly any vehicle you please.

What does head up mean?

In relation to what? If someone tells you "heads up" you should be looking around. If its heads up display on a vehicle it a display that is projected onto the inside od your windshield so you can keep your "head up" and still see your speed, etc.

My heads-up display on my 04 grand prix gtp went out! how can i fix this?

I've had to fix both of my HUDs on my two 2004 Grand Prixs. Look down low through the steering wheel to see if the display. Hopefully you can. You can also look through the windshield at th HUD unit. Look at the tension spring and see if it is loose. The problem on my cars was the spring wore through the plastic lever that controls the reflection angle of the HUD. If this is the case, you are in luck. Remove the A-pillar moldings by simply pulling them off. You must then pull up on the plastic dash molding that encases th HUD and runs the entire width of the dash. Remove the screw on the far left side of the dash by your left knee. Pull out the plastic arch molding over the instrument cluster. Unbolt the instrument cluster and pull out enough to get to the screw that holds in the HUD. (There are two screws, one in front and one on top.) Pull out the HUD and unplug. Carefully take the HUD apart. Get some good epoxy or JB weld and fix the plastic lever. You must the drill a hole for the spring or poke a hole through the epoxy as it is setting up. I let mine dry overnight before re assembling everything. The task may sound daunting, but it is not. You should be able to get the HUD out in 20-30 minutes. Hope this helps. Everyone should place sunvisors over their HUDS ALWAYS!

Just wanted to know how much it would cost for a tune up on a 04 grandprix gtp?

You could do this yourself for as little as 12 dollars and rarely over 60.

Six copper core autolite 605 spark plugs, a can of throttle body cleaner and a reusable air filter.

At a shop or dealership...over a hundred.

HUD

There is a spring inside the HUD and it has probably come off. The samething happened to mine. I had to take it out myself and fix it. Majorhassle. The dealer wanted over 600.00 to do the same.
