This may be a simple adjustment of the brakelight switch. Its located under the dash and gets pushed by the pedal returning up when you release the brake pedal and activated when you push the pedal down. Look under the dash and see if the brake switch has come loose from the bracket that holds it or if its broken. If you dont see it right off follow the brake pedal up and youll see it.
Hope this helps... Dale

The cause is the brake light switch on the backside on top of the brake pedal. it is either out off adjustment or it needs replaced. this switch activates the brake lights when pushing on brake pedal. if it gets out of adjustment or sticks the brake lights will stay on because it does not cut voltage to brake lights. have a good day !!

Replaced the battery now the brake lights stay on. why?

Brake light switch is either defective or needs to be adjusted. Probably not related to the battery being replaced.

Brake lights stay on

It's probably a stuck brake light switch. Look around the brake pedal for the switch -- it could be dirty or broken or loose from its mount and jammed against something.
