If the check engine light is on look at the faults. It could be a defective cam sensor, the timing belt might not be in the place, or a defective mass air flow sensor.
SOURCE: engine speed will not rev over 4000rpm
Sounds like a fuel filter issue. If the filter is clogged or is getting to the point where it's going to be clogged badly the amount of fuel going to the engine will be restricted. This would cause your stated problem. Theoretically there isn't much of a need to go over 4000 rpm unless you are racing with the car but I think most bimmer owners can understand where you are coming from:) As far as the 1993, I'd check all your intake piping and vacuum lines and make sure there are no leaks whatsoever. An easy way to check is to have the car running and spray carb cleaner on the intake piping and such and see if your revs increase, if they do you've got a leak. Hope this helps! I'd be glad to help with any other questions you might have a please don't forget to rate me.

Hi
one of 3 faults
1 MAF sensor also Known as air mass sensor
2 EGR valve, this is most common with the 4000 rev limit and a top speed of say 50 mph
3 air leaks or tears in air pipes or poor seals.
I would be tempted to clean both the EGR and MAF sensor before spending any money though, these parts ofetn work much lonegr when clean

My 1.8L will not rev past 2000 rpm when engine is up to operating temperature. During warm up, it is fine. When warm, I can slowly bring it up to 2000 rpm. Once there, it will pulsate up and down between 1200 and 2000 with a steady rhythym. I have determined that this is caused by the fuel system, not the spark. I can add fuel with a spray-can through the breather port and the engine will rev up normally. New fuel and air filters did not help. Happens at exactly 2000 rpm. Does the rev limiter shut down the fuel injectors, or the ignition system?
