Rough idle, hesistates when accelerating, then smooths out. High mileage, changed plugs, and tried to time ignition, but can't get close.

I drive a 1992 Pontiac Firebird with a 3.1L V6 EFI. In the past month I have noticed that during idle or when accelerating, the engine seems to run quite rough. This causes power to be minimal and intermittent. Generally, the power will smooth out once the speed gets up, but not always. None of the lights have gone on in the instrument panel to represent any sort of fuel problem. I took the vehicle to a GM dealership to see if they could tell me what was wrong. They had my vehicle for three days and said that it wouldn't do it for them. They had checked the plugs, wires, and distributor. Fuel injector cleaner was run in the engine recently at a Wackerly Auto shop, however this problem existed prior to this being done. I picked it up from the GM after their normal business hours (they didn't charge since didn't fix anything). During the 30 minute drive home, most of the problem seemed to have disappeared. However, I still noticed the hesitation and rough idle. The weather seemed to get a little bit better and the problem seemed to have disappeared altogether. Recently, it snowed and has been quite cold out. The problem has returned once again. At times, the problem doesn't seem as bad. Today, I went to accelerate normally and had a very rough start, but hit approximately 30mph and suddenly had a burst of fairly even power. Any assistance in solving this problem is greatly appreciated since I have become doubtful about the capability of my local GM dealership to diagnose the problem at hand.

Could you please provide complete info, what engine, what year, what does it feel like, does the ingine shake or mis-fire, or is it smooth and just lacks power? How many miles? and what has been done to try and fix this problem? have the factory maintainence recommendations for parts changes been done as outlined in the owners amnual?

Hard starting, rough idle when cold, then smooth running when warm

Need year/make/model/mileage of vehicle to provide a more specific set of troubleshooting steps.

When was the last tune up? Hard starts when cold are usually caused by fouled spark plugs, worn plug wires, or weak ignition coils. Fuel systems are not as effected by temperature changes as the ignition components.

Check engine light comes on temporarily - engine chuggs at idle

Before changing you pcm try cleaning your egr valve. remove the valve and see if its stuck in the open position if so use a small pick to clean around the spring.

Not idling smoothly, sometimes having to restart at a stop w/ tranny in drive.

sure, that could be it. I would also suspect the fuel filter as well.
