You may have the wrong puller to do the job. suggest you try an advance auto parts store and rent the right puller for the repair, all your money to rent the right tool will be refunded after the tools returned. the harmonic balancer should be removed easily with the right removal tool and a small ammount of wd40 sprayed onto the crankshaft behind and in front of the balancer onto the shaft. keep in mind that there is a half moon keeper key on the shaft where the balancer slides onto the crankshaft. lube the shaft well and it should slide off with ease with the removal tool. thank you for choosing fixya.com!!

I'm trying to remove a harmonic balancer. I've got to the point of taking it off. The pulley remover is placed. But the bolt when completely down only turns the balancer. How to fix please

Are you using a gear puller or an actual harmonic bal. puller? You can use air tools(carefully), or to hold the balancer/pulley still, use a chain wrench with an old belt wrapped around to prevent damage. I would not recommend a 2 or 3 jaw type gear puller.

How to install balance drive gear on crankshaft 2007 Camry 2.4

Remove old crankshaft pulley ( Harmonic Balancer), by putting sturdy socket, think its 19mm, or 3/4 " on the center crankshaft bolt, with a good size breaker bar, wedge the breaker bar in between the suspension, and drive axle, to keep the breaker bar from spinning, while, you now turn the key inside the car, to engage starter, to spin the crankshaft, which may take several attempts, of turning the key, and putting socket back on, they are very stubborn,to break the center bolt loose,
Then remove harmonic balancer, with a PULLER, which requires 2 bolts, in the threaded holes, one on each side of the now empty center bolt hole, autozone , advance, has these to loan out, only requires deposit, which they give back to you, when you return it.
Put square key in slot on bare crankshaft, slide harmonic balancer,(crankshaft pulley, while lining up the square key,and tighten crankshaft bolt.

Harmonic balancer removal

Hello:

I have removed several of the harmonic balancer bolts, and it is difficult to hold the harmonic balancer from spinning when you remove the bolt. The bolt is normal thread, and removal is counterclockwise. There is a Honda holding tool you can get, or possibly borrow from a autoparts store. I always use either an impact wrench or a long breaker bar, and hold the harmonic balancer from rotating with a chain style wrench. I use an old belt to keep from damaging the damper pulley.
Good luck!

How to change a harmonic balance

Hello....Well first of all...most of the time...To do this job...you will need special tools...There is a center bolt that connects the balancer to the crank shaft...It's driven in really tight so most likely..a pneumatic wrench or a good breaker bar will need to be used to remove it...once you remove the center bolt...there is a tool called a puller that is used to walk the balancer off the crank shaft...You can either rent or buy this tool...in some cases a gear puller will work...or a tool called a harmonic balancer puller can be used..it has either 2 or 3 hooks to clamp onto the harmonic balancer and a bolt in the center that you tighten with a wrench..as you do,,,the balancer slowly inches forward until it is off the crankshaft...now to get the new balancer on..there is a tool called a Press which is a bolt that is specially designed to do the opposite of the puller...you place the new balancer on the crankshaft..install the press as you would the center bolt...and tighten it with a wrench and it will slowly walk the balancer onto the crank shaft...Then you remove the press and install the center bolt..preferrably with a torque wrench...Now...after reading all this...are you sure you want to do this yourself....an honest mecanic will most likely do this job for $150 bucks....Parts and labor....If you do this yourself..let me know how it goes....I hope this was helpful....PEACE...

How do you remove the harmonic balancer on a 1987 GMC R3500 with a 454?

You remove the giant bolt, then you use a harmonic balancer puller, which essentially bolts up rather than using claws to grab. The bolts of the puller go into the pulley fastening bolt holes.

Something must happen to protect the crank threads, a spacer, using the retainer bolt, or whatever, just do not kill the threads.

How do i remove the harmonic balancer bolt to replace the timing cocer gasket on a 1999 ford tarus se

If there is no air-compressor and an impact gun to remove the harmonic balancer bolt, then there are two other ways to remove it. Either remove the inspection cover at the bell-housing and use a large flat head screwdriver to wedge between the flex-plate drive gear teeth and the engine block so that the engine is locked-up, and then remove the harmonic balancer bolt with a long breaker bar and a lot of muscle power, or for the more advanced mechanics and only they should attempt this, place a long breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt and then brace the breaker bar up against the frame of the vehicle so that when the engine turns over the breaker bar will stop on the vehicle frame, and keep in mind that the crankshaft will turn clockwise or to the right, and when you are looking for some place to brace the breaker bar be sure that nothing else will get in the way or it will be damaged. Be sure that the breaker bar is on the harmonic balancer bolt properly, and place the breaker bar about 1 to 2 inches from the vehicle frame so that when the engine turns the breaker bar will lock up against the vehicle frame, and while holding the breaker bar in place have someone turn the ignition key and give the starter a bump, and be very sure to keep your hand away from where the breaker bar is going to contact the vehicle frame, or your fingers will get smashed by the breaker bar when it turns into the frame so do not attempt this if you are unfamiliar with using hand tools, and the starter should break the harmonic balancer bolt loose easily, so be very sure that your hands are out of the way of getting hurt when the starter motor is used to break the harmonic balancer bolt loose.

How do you replace the harmonic balancer pulley on the 2000 oldsmobile intrigue

The short answer to your question is:

1. Raise the car on the passenger side and remove the front wheel.
2. Remove the belts on the harmonic balancer.
3. Remove the retaining bolt.
4. With a puller, jack the harmonic balancer off of the crank shaft. You can rent a puller at your local auto parts store. It is easiest to access the harmonic balancer through the fender, hence the need to remove the wheel.
5. You should also consider replacing the seal around the harmonic balancer to minimize the possibility of a leak later.
6. Install the new harmonic balancer and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque (I don't know this off the top of my head).
7. Replace the belts and wheel, and voila...mission accomplished.

This was a short answer to your question. You may wish to consult a repair manual for illustrations, torque specifications, additional instructions, etc. This job is not for the faint of heart. Good luck!

I need a how to to change harmonic balancer for 1995 nissan maxima. step by step

First remove right front tire and support vehicle with a jack stand. Remove splash guard lower portion near the harmonic balancer. Remove all drive belts. First remove the A/C alternator belt. Loosen the 14mm bolt at the front of the belt tenioner and then loosen the tensioner bolt (it is the one that stands out, you use a socket on it.). The power steering adjuster bolt with be gained from the bottom. It has a 12mm bolt head on it. You will break the jamb bolt loose first and then loosen the adjusting bolt. Pull down on the belt the help move it after you've loosened it some. Then remove harmonic balancer bolt (19mm).If the harmonic balancer will not slide off the crankshaft then use a two finger gear puller. Place the harmonic balancer bolt back in the crankshaft but do not tighten it. Leave it about a half inch from being all the way in. Next place the puller onto the harmonic balancer (one finger on each side securely press into the belt groove. The center puller bolt will rest against the harmonic balancer bolt head. Tighten the puller bolt and make sure the harmonice balancer bolt does not turn. The balancer should come off at this point.

My 1996 dodge neon's crank balancer will not come off. i need to take this off to get the timing belt off. to fix a blown headgagsket.

Take everything in front of it off.  Use a long breaker bar and socket, 1/2" drive, 3/4" if you have one.  Put the socket on the nut and the bar across to a piece of the frame.  BUMP the starter.  DO NOT CRANK IT.  This will break the nut loose.
