START your work Disconnecting the battery Terminals. to Eliminate possibles short. in the wiring. or any MODULE.
Remove the cover and see. if the Burn smell is there.
Maybe the ECM.. Can be damaged.
First see if when you turn the Key to RUN Position. The CHECK ENGINE come ON.. If NOT Remove the ECM. and inspect. Check the RELAYS on that Location. Because the FUEL PUMP relay is ATTECHED to the ECM Braket.

I believe you're talking about fuel pump you can check this link for this concern http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/04/e6/88/0900823d8004e688/repairInfoPages.htm
Hope that helps...........
The fuel pump is in the tank, and should be accessible through an access panel in the hatch, if you look under the carpeting.
It sounds like something else went wrong with the car though - if it simply was fuel-starved, you shouldn't have gotten the smoke/burning smell. There are a lot of electronics in the dash and any one of them could've fried. Unfortunately without taking some things apart, it's going to be very tough to figure out what caused it.
