The fuel pump is in the tank, and should be accessible through an access panel in the hatch, if you look under the carpeting.

It sounds like something else went wrong with the car though - if it simply was fuel-starved, you shouldn't have gotten the smoke/burning smell. There are a lot of electronics in the dash and any one of them could've fried. Unfortunately without taking some things apart, it's going to be very tough to figure out what caused it.

Glad it helped at least a bit - if you get a chance to get in there inside the dash and explore, post back up and request me and I'll see what else I can do for you.

Why is my 2003 land rover Freelander burning 20amp fuel system fuses

You have an electrical short in that circuit. The fuse is doing its job, preventing a fire (barely). You need to find where the short is before trying to operate this vehicle again, or you will end up setting it on fire. Look for the burned/melted wires.

300zx started smoking then died out

Sounds to me like you had an electrical burn out or near fire condition. Water may have gotten into an open area like wiring harness or fuse block and caused a short and what you were smelling is the insulation or other plastics burning. I would take the car to a auto electric specialist for diagnostics.

If it's blue smoke, your burning oil. Get the head gasket checked. If that's ok your looking at something more serious, (more expensive), inside the engine.

I got in my car this morning and I got about 1/2 block away from the house and I started to smell something. Then Smoke started to come out of the vents on the dash board. I have just replaced a unit that...

I assume you replaced the resistor. Often, the resistor failure is caused by the switch, and replacing the resistor will result in burning up another resistor. Recommend you look at your new resistor and if it's burning up, replace the switch. Let me know if you need any instructions.

For an explanation, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6234839-doesn_t_heater_or_air_conditioner_blow . These are generic instructions.
