Greetings, and thanks for your time! My 1990 Volvo 240DL idles a little rough, runs ok (I think it does, it's a friends car, and I never drove it until this problem started) and then after a short drive it revs real high when put into park. Here's the back story: Car was hard to start and would die without revving the throttle a bit. We've replaced the fuel relay and the fuel filter. My friend also put in some oil before I got involved (Maybe too much, there's a puddle in the driveway, but I see no oil leak now) . So it's much better now, but still unhappy with something. Any troubleshooting tips would be much appreciated!

SOURCE: replacing water pump on 1989 volvo 240dl

I did not have any problem installing the water pump. It took about 2 hrs.
Just pay attention to how the old one is designed and comes off the block.

Tap out the tube from the water pump to the heater core and replace the gasket in place with a small amount of gasket sealer to hold it in place.

use a lever to raise the water pump to squeeze the larger O ring into place so you can start the first bolt and you'll be on your way to the finish line in no time.

This is not a job for your average home owner do it your selfer. a little more than basic machanics is sugested to do this one.

SOURCE: when im idling in park or neutral engine revs high

These cars used a motor underneath the intake manifold to control the idle. The crank sensor may need to be checked, the signal to the motor needs to be checked. If you have a seperate control module (passenger footwell, right side, behind the plastic) under the main fuel control module, you may want to check the wiring on that as well. The Haynes manual for these vehicles describe the system very well.

SOURCE: no brake lights 1987 volvo 240dl fuses fine bulbs

Welcome to Fixya

If you already tried the paper clip method then most likely the tail light assembly circuit board films or wirings that is having the problem. Use a test light to check for power at the tail light assembly, while you have the switch bypassed.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Rough idle in 740 1990 Volvo Smooths out a bit when driving

When it idles rough it could be several things but, an easier thing you can do 1st is cleat the throttle body of any carbon(black stuff) with throttle body cleaner or something like carb cleaner. Ive used brake cleaner sometimes. But yea, look up your cars info about your motor and just clean all the black carbon off of anything at the throttle body and you may even need to take some of it apart to get down in there with a rag, little cleaning brush and the cleaner. Clean the thing you can move by hand called a "butterfly".

Rough idle and lack of power

Since you have fuel injection for fuel delivery, something has to tell the system how long to have the fuel injectors open, and something has to tell the system when to activate each fuel injector ... unless you have throttle body injection. Do you know which type of fuel injection you have? I will need that answer above before telling you anything useful.

Acts like it isn't getting fuel or is misfiring... started suddenly according to my daughter

First check that the timing is set propperly, that all ignition wires are in good shape(not arcing) and connected properly, distributor cap not cracked, fuel pressure, air mass and or oxygen sensors are ok. The last two may have to be done by a pro depending on your experience.

1990 240 volvo idle problems

I just had a similar problem with my 1990 240DL and it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator located on the forward part of the fuel rail in the engine compartment in conjunction with the mas air flow meter. Both were repalced and now the engine idles normally.

91 volvo 240 - keeps stalling out, shakes a lot when idling

My 1990 240DL was doing the same thing and it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. It, unfortunatley, is a shop repair. $117 for the part and $150 for labor. It runs fine now.
