I have a 2008 Pontiac Torrent. In November and December of this year I had to call Roadside Assistance 5 times to come and boost my battery. It was colder than usual but not really cold. I took my vehicle in to the dealership and they replaced the battery saying that it was frozen. The new battery gave me the same problem. Car would not start and had to call Roadside Assistance again. Took the vehicle in to dealership and they said it was dying because I was not driving it far enough to charge the battery. I've had 5 other brand new vehicles and never had this problem and my driving habits have not changed. I use my vehicle every day. They said the solution to this problem was to have a trickle charger installed. I told them I thought there was something else causing the battery to die and not because it was not being driven on long trips. I had this very same problem in 2009. My email address is [email protected]

The Car would not start ? When ? after sitting ? How long ? You could have a parasitic draw on the electical system ! All the electronic control modules on your vehicle , one may not be powering down or going to sleep as some call it . Drawing power when it shouldn't .
Your vehicle has a
The electrical power management (EPM) system ,the battery should be charged enough with all driving conditions !

The electrical power management (EPM) system is designed to monitor and control the charging system and send diagnostic messages to alert the driver of possible problems with the battery and generator. This EPM system primarily utilizes existing on-board computer capability to maximize the effectiveness of the generator, to manage the load, improve battery state-of-charge and life, and minimize the system's impact on fuel economy. The EPM system performs 3 functions:
• It monitors the battery voltage and estimates the battery condition.
• It takes corrective actions by boosting idle speeds, and adjusting the regulated voltage.
• It performs diagnostics and driver notification.
The battery condition is estimated during ignition-off and during ignition-on. During ignition-off the state-of-charge (SOC) of the battery is determined by measuring the open-circuit voltage. The SOC is a function of the acid concentration and the internal resistance of the battery, and is estimated by reading the battery open circuit voltage when the battery has been at rest for several hours.
The SOC can be used as a diagnostic tool to tell the customer or the dealer the condition of the battery. Throughout ignition-on, the algorithm continuously estimates SOC based on adjusted net amp hours, battery capacity, initial SOC, and temperature.
While running, the battery degree of discharge is primarily determined by a battery current sensor, which is integrated to obtain net amp hours.
In addition, the EPM function is designed to perform regulated voltage control (RVC) to improve battery SOC, battery life, and fuel economy. This is accomplished by using knowledge of the battery SOC and temperature to set the charging voltage to an optimum battery voltage level for recharging without detriment to battery life.
The Charging System Description and Operation is divided into 3 sections. The first section describes the charging system components and their integration into the EPM. The second section describes charging system operation. The third section describes the instrument panel cluster (IPC) operation of the charge indicator, driver information center (DIC) messages, and voltmeter operation.

SOURCE: Car not running on all cylinders

the first thing that comes to mind is ignition system faults. Are the spark plug wires connected properly, in the right firing order? Has work been done on the distributer, or the engine head, recently? Ignition timing can be 180 degrees out, and the engine will still run, sometimes. If it is not the ignition system, the next most likely culprit is the head gasket, which seals the head to the block of the engine. If this gasket is breached seriously, it can cause a cylinder(s) not to fire. Is there water in the oil, as evidenced by a thick, white foam? Is there oil in the coolant? Either of these are symptoms of a leaking head gasket.
Basically, one cylinder isnt firing for one of a number of reasons. The most common cause is an igntion fault. This will cause the engine to feel and sound "lumpy", and the power would be greatly reduced. The best way to find the cylinder which is responsible is quite simple but care must be taken. Firstly if you hate electric shocks as much as I do, find a proper pair of electricians insulated pliers, and even some decent rubber gloves if you can aswell. Start the engine, and one at a time, use the pliers to remove a lead from the top of one spark plug, if the engine almost stops, or gets worse in any way, it is not that piston which isnt firing. Repeat the proccess, one at a time, you will know which piston ISNT firing when you remove the plug lead, and there is no change in the engine sound, this is your defective cylinder. Its just a case then of looking at the condition of the spark plug and asessing the cause of the misfire before carrying out repairs. BEWARE:- THE LEADS WHICH CONNECT TO THE SPARK PLUGS CARRY SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF VOLTS - HENCE RUBBER GLOVES AND INSULATED PLIERS

SOURCE: Anti-theft code 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

DO a google search for Radio lock codes with you make model vehicle,, for 7$ you can get it,,here is what I found for a 2000 gp..
1. Press and hold presets 2 and 3 for about 7 seconds until you get 3 digits on your display. This is the first 3 digits you will need, so write them down.

2. Press the AM/FM button to get the last 3 of the 6 numbers you will need. You only have 5 seconds to do this. If you wait too long before pressing the AM/FM button, the display will go back to LOC. If this is the case, just start over at step 1.

3. Call 1-800-537-5140, press 2 for Pontiac, press 620529 and hit the # key. The computerized voice will ask you for your 6 digit code you have written down. Enter that and press the * key. He will then give you your unlock code, and the option to get additional codes. The first one worked for me so do not worry about the additional ones.

4. Set the code into your radio by pressing the hour set button on your radio until it corresponds with the first 2 digits of your code, then press the minute set button until the last 2 digits of your code are entered. Immediately press the AM/FM button once the correct code is entered and the code SEC or "secured" will be displayed. This part of the procedure is outlined in your owners manual.

5. If you want, you can change your code so you will not forget it, or get rid of the theftlock all together. These procedures are outlined in your owners manual, read it if you would like to change these values.

6. turn on the power to your radio and enjoy.

Hints:

- The first 3 and the last 3 digits were the same on my radio. (for example first 3 were 123 and last 3 were 123) First I thought I was doing something wrong when the display wasn't changing, but I wasn't. Just to let you know it is a possibility.

- The dealer code 620529 is an actual dealer. If GM finds out that this code was leaked to the public, they will remove it from their system. If the dealer code does not work when you phone the 1-800 number, you can search for a new dealer code on the internet somewhere. If this does happen, PM me and I will try to find one that works for you.

SOURCE: Seems like the battery is dead in cold weather.

It's possible that the battery is shot even though it's a newer car. I have a 2006 Ford Taurus I had to replace the battery in 2007. You just never know with batteries. Do you have 5W30 oil in the car?

2008 Pontiac Torrent 3.4. How do I replace a fan belt on it please?

Question edited for clarity, year make model first.
Question moved to model category.

They don't call them 'fan belts' any more because the belt doesn't run the cooling fan because they are all electric. They are now called a 'serpentine belt', I guess because they wrap around all the pulleys like a serpent..

This is not an easy job on this vehicle because the belt has a fixed engine mount in the middle of it! This explains

98 saturn sl1 won't start

if you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.
