Hi, the EGR valve is sitting on the intake manifold as shown below. Yes, this valve can be the cause of had start/rough idle if it is stuck open. Remove the valve to see if you can blow thru it. If it's stuck open, you may be able to repair it by cleaning with carb cleaner. If you cannot get it to close properly, replace it. If the valve is closing properly, pull off the vacuum hose, start the engine, and make sure there is no vacuum on the hose at idle. If there is, the vacuum solenoid may have failed open. The solenoid is shown in the second picture below. You should not be able to blow thru this one either, except when it is turned on by the PCM. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

How can I by-pass the egr valve in a international pro-star with a 450 maxxforce engine?

DO NOT BYPASS AN EGR VALVE. the computer commands this to open at certain times and some require feedback form the egr. then it will turn on the service engine soon light. egr valves are part of the emission system and stop valve rattle which can cause valve failure. just get a new one and do not try to clean it as it will not work hence stick.

Where is the egr valve on a 99 Ford expedition

The EGR valve is in a very difficult spot to work on. If the EGR is bad it will set off the check engine light and make the vehicle run rough or stall at idle. It really doesn't make it run rough while driving or accelerating. What are the conditions when the car runs rough?

1993 chevy caprice with a 32 dtc code?

Code 32 is the egr system, if you are getting a rough idle then this may be your problem, check the EGR valve, this system has a few parts the valve and the vacuum control solenoid , the valve may be bad or have carbon stuck in pintle or solenoid is bad and allows vacuum to open it at idle when it is not suppose to. try to remove vacuum line and see if idle smooths out if not remove the valve and see if it is open, if it is something you can clean then do so otherwisr replace it and also the solenoid.

when you remove the valve start the engine it will rev high but thats okay, with engine running you will see two ports, one should have vacuum and the other exhaust, make sure they are not plugged, if so unplug them. start with this.

1993 LeSabre- just started running rough mostly when put in reverse or drive. Not so much in park or neutral but a little, maybe cause of higher idle speed in park. Also runs a bit rough at slow speeds....

Sounds like the Torque Converter Lock-up Solenoid is failing. It will cause the car to run rough at slow speeds, and sometimes stall while idling in gear (at a stop sign for example)
To test this, locate the 2 or 3 wire connector on the left side of the transmission (looking at it from the left side of the car, it can be hard to find some times) Disconnect it. If the car runs and drives ok with it unplugged, the Lock Up Solenoid has gone bad. The solenoid itself is inside the valve body, inside the transmission (above the transmission pan)

Sounds like a possible Idle Air Control valve, or more likely there is carbon stuck in the EGR valve. If the EGR valve is stuck open because of carbon chunks, the engine will run very rough, barely idle, and surge. Remove the EGR valve, clean the inside of it with carb cleaner, and replace the gasket with a screened gasket. This doesnt allow carbon the reach the valve and clog it again. Valve is located on front of the intake manifold. . .under the rubber intake boot going into the throttle body

i would check all the basics like spark plugs and check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. With a can of 2+2 carb cleaner while engine is running --if idle goes up or down that is were your leak is--
check egr too, Lee

You replace alot of things but you should replace the EGR valve and the throttle positioning valve also. I would start with the EGR valve
