I have a 2004 astro van and the transfer case control module is only passing the encoder motor 4.5 volts.

Was the transfer case control module check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ? Need professional or factory scanner to check these code's .
SERVICE AWD LIGHT ON , DTC'S are stored . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.
Do you know what DTC'S are ????? The AWD system can set a few of them .
DTC C0300
DTC C0305
DTC C0308
DTC C0309
DTC C0310
DTC C0315
DTC C0374
DTC C0376
DTC C0550
DTC C0611

Do you know what a pulse width modulated (PWM) circuit is ? You can't check power feed to the encoder motor with a volt meter , you will get a wrong reading . A lab scope is the best tool .

The encoder motor is controlled with a pulse width modulated (PWM) circuit provided by the transfer case shift control module. This circuit consists of a power supply relay, Motor Control A, and supplies voltage to the motor. The Motor Control B circuit is a PWM driver that varies the duty cycle to control the amount of current through the motor to ground. The transfer case encoder motor can be turned ON and OFF using a scan tool. You may also monitor Motor Control A and B circuits using a scan tool.

How can I tell whether the transfer case control module is defective and needs to be replaced?

Need to have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes , see if a scan tool will communicate with it , see if it will show data PID'S .
SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) Lamp
The SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) lamp is an integral part of the cluster and cannot be serviced separately. This lamp is used to inform the driver of the vehicle of malfunctions within the automatic transfer case (ATC) system. The SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) lamp is controlled by the transfer case shift control module via CKT 1567.

Is your service indicator lamp lit ?
which of these does your jimmy have
Transfer Case - NVG 233-NP1 (Two Speed Selectable)
Transfer Case - NVG 236 (Two Speed Automatic)

Service awd light comes on and off awd doesn't work when light is on

You need to check wiring an connectors at the transfer case shift control module an check power an grounds at the module ! If all seams good there a scan tool will need to be hooked up to check for codes ! If none of this makes no sense or you don't under stand any of this you need to take it to someone who does !

2006 Mountaineer 4x4 light on awd stuck.

Have a shop diagnose the problem if you
have not purchased the factory diagnostic
manuals from Helm.Com
Don't know why you would think fluid change on
any part of the vehicle would do a thing
Have you not checked for codes
That is always the first thing you do even
without a MIL lamp on.

The Smart Trac AWD is not turning the front wheels. Had it check by mechanic and the drivetrain is spinning but not engaging the front axles. Accuator? or other ideas?

Did you change your transfer case fluid every 50K miles? Very important requirement in the Owner's Manual. And how are the TC and differential fluid levels today? If all this its ok, them sound like the AWD vehicles like yours will need a dealer reprogram if the TCCM came off a 4WD vehicle.

Keep in mind that the part-time 4WD systems like I have (with 4LO as an option in the transfer case) have a front axle disconnect actuator plus the transfer case. But full-time AWD systems like you have use the transfer case only to send or not send torque to the front axle. You don't have a front axle actuator.

If the technician was using the tech tool to talk to the transfer case (not the front axle), then the TC (Transfer Case) could have an internal problem, or the Transfer Case encoder motor could have a problem, or the Control Module. You should definitely try spinning the front driveshaft by hand and see if the front wheels move.

Keep us updated.

AWD service light io on all wheel not working

Probably a bad transfer case encoder motor. Common problem on Bravadas. Also make sure your transfer case uses only "blue" GM Auto Trac II fluid. Flush once after driving a week with "blue" if you don't find "blue" fluid when origianlly checking. Just temporarily plugging a new encoder motor to harness should get the light to go out. Other less likely problem could be bad AWD control module or fuse.

How does my 4x4 push button locker work in my 1989 chevy K1500?

That depends a lot on how your truck is equipped. GM uses several different 4 wheel systems including AWD, Part-Time 4WD, Full-Time 4WD, and ON-Demand AWD. Then there is another version used on some trucks that is a combination of 4WD and On Demand AWD. - it gets a little confusing but each system as slightly different charachteristics.

Genericly speaking, if you have the push-buttons on your dash that say "4-HI", "4-LO", and "2HI" and/or Auto-4WD , the transfer case has an electronicly-controlled stepper motor which shifts the transfer case into the selected mode. An electric solenoid/actuator then engages/disengages the front differential for 2-Wheel or 4-Wheel modes. One push of the button and it shifts the transfer case and engages the front differential.

That's much easier than the old days when you had to stop the truck, get out (Sometimes in the middle of a big mud hole) and lock the front hubs then get back in and play with the lever in the floor to get the transfer case to shift into the desired mode.
