Which engine is it? Are you certain that you put the belt on with the cam(s) and crank in their correct positions?

Be careful as that motor is a zero tolerance valve clearance. did you time the oil pump properly? also the internal balancer timed properly, You didnt state if this is a single overhead cam 24 valve maybe repost with motor specs as i just did this same job two days ago and it was pretty easy with no problems as long as you aligned all timing marks properly when tightening the tensioner pulley, and also providing the valves did not get damaged

Hello. My stratus -97 (V6, 2.5) just stopped when I drove. A weak little dunk under the hood and all the lights came on. Also check engine. I have no spark anymore.

97 dodge neon timing belt broke while going down the road need to know how to get car back in time bought a new timing belt new tensioner and still cannont get car to start junk yard says my car does not...

I do not have good news for you.
According to the Gates Timing Belt guide 2002 Edition, both engines offered in the Dodge Neon are interference engines.
This means that your engine has likely sustained sgnificant valve, cylinder head or even piston damage. Have you tested the compression?
It is probably least expensive to buy a used engine, change its timing belt and replace your engine with that one.

Belt comes off when it rain change all pulleys

have you changed the tensioner assembly as it wears it will tip and let the belt walk off the pully also there is a drain tube on the bottom of the wiper tray if that is mising or broke all the water from the tray drains onto the belt either will cause the belt to slip off let me know how youmake out

CAR WONT START

sounds like your timing belt let go..ther is a rubber plug in top of timing belt cover..remove it and see if camshaft sprocket is turning..if not, belt broke..more than likely valve or piston damage

Motor turns over but wont start

Does the distributor turn? Some of the old serpentine belt might have got into the timing belt and broke it.

My timing belt broke on my 1997 Dodge Stratus, 2.4. Is it a for sure thing that the valves are bent? How do I change the belt and check to see if the valves are bent? many thanks, NC

mine broke on my 2000 and i lucked out, the top end was unharmed. the cheapest route is to have someone change the timing belt, fire it up and see if it runs. it will spit and sputter at first while adjusting the timing, but after a few minutes it will clear up. if it runs like ****, your valves are shot. the 2.4 is a non interference motor, so it's the luck of the irish on your side.
