97 mpv died while driving. gets gas and fuel. is it the timing belt?

When you crank the engine does it sound whinny? If it does then yes its the timing belt, the only real way to tell is to remove the distributor cap and crank the engine and see if the rotor of the distributor turns if it turns then its not the timing belt. Here is the thing 1997 Mazda MPV is identified as a interference engine meaning that if the timing belt broke it is MOST likely to do engine valve damage, So you will have to pull the timing belt cover and inspect the T-belt you will know if its broken when you push on the belt and there is no tension on it,

I have replaced the thermostat and the radiator cap yet the 1992 ford explorer continues to overheat. WHY?

Check to see if fluid is flowing in the coolant system. if no flow suspect water pump

Could also be one of the coolant sensors.

this is an older vehicle if it has high miles you may just need to replece your head gaskets

hope this helps
