Yup it was the #5 fuse under the glovebox on the right.....Crazy that the little 15amp fuse controls all of that...

My 4x4 button on my dash wont turn on and my 4x4 wont engage . I used it yesterday, usually lights up and 4x4 engages 94 mazda b4000 le 4x4 .

Ford Rangers and Mazda b-series vehicles are the same. I would be willing to bet it is a problem with your shift motor. There is a sensor on the motor that tells the "shift computer" where it is in regards to position. The sensor has a ceramic disk that is glued to a shaft. The glue dries out and the disk doesn't spin with the shaft, so the computer doesn't know the position. You can disassemble the shift motor and re-glue, or just replace the entire shift motor assembly. It's $85 - $100 for a remanufactured unit from Napa (or similar). I just did this for my '94 Ranger, tore it apart and fixed it.

Before doing any of that I would check the 4x4 fuse in the box under the hood. The other fuse to check is inside the cab. It is on the same circuit as the warning lights (if your dash warning lights work, that fuse is fine).

sounds like the tranny shift cable let go.
why not look at actual tranny while person , shifts.?
i fit under mine, neat, if you can fit , use jack stands. never a jack to
crawl under any car.
or park car on a curb alllowing safe crawls under.

the dash display shows the status of the PRNDL switch
on side of tranny, seems yours dont move, to me.
if not the cable is not connected. (clips or snap cable)

It seems like this 98 is well known for this, i have a 98 as well and never had this problem YET? god i shouldnt have said it. but in my fuse cluster on the side of dash inside behind drivers door is a fuse in the 26 th position (10 A) that says its the electronic shift relay, electronic shift control module, power window relay, interior lamp relay, battery saver relay. CHECK THIS FUSE, also pos 27, ( 15A) it says DLR,back-up lamp switch,DTR sensor, GEM, (generic electronic module) ELECTRIC SHIFT. check this fuse also. Under the hood by the battery there is another fuse box inside there is a "POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE' I dont know what this is but it says what it says, it is located in the # 6 position and is a 10a fuse...." Be careful if you rev the gas as if it does engage you could do damage to drivtrain, also if someone is under,in front of or behind the vehicle and engages " POSSIBLE DEATH or SEVERE INJURIES could occur. Be safe and good luck

My 4 wheel drive dont work when i turn the switch the light wont turn on and it wont engage at all

First thing to check is for a blown fuse or circut breaker. Consult the owners manual fuse panel section. There are usually 2 panels on the Fords, one is under dash the other power distributuin center is under hood.

import cars in that year usually have a computer controlling the transmission. I would look for any fuses that are blown, whether under the dash or under the hood. If not, check the shift linkage going from the shifter to the transmission, make sure that the bushings aren't broken or gone. There goes the easy solutions i think... Worse case scenario is the tranny is bad or the computer controlling the tranny is bad.

Someone else had a problem with one,but it wouldnt disengage, have you check the shift motor yet? also we found out that there is a module behind the passenger side kick panel that has a reset button on it,try that. The sensor i think you are looking for is on the transfercase,i believe it is round with 3 or 4 wires going to it.But i think all it does is makes the appropiate light come on on the dash--4x4 high or 4x4 not sure about it.

Check BJB ( aka Battery Junction Box, Engine Compartment fuse panel ) Fuse #17. This is the power to the Transfer Case shift relay, which powers the Shift motor in the Transfer case and power to the magnetic clutch coil ( via the transfer case relay ).

The other fuse to check is the CJB ( aka Central Junction Box, cab fuse panel ) Fuse #23.

If both fuses check good, time to check for power on the connector for the shift relay and the shift motor. The power from BJB Fuse # 17 is the Dark Green w/ Light Green stripe ( this is hot at all times ).
The old school test is to lightly hit the back of the transfer case, to see if the shift motor is hung up.
Here are the diagrams, so you can see what I am talking about.
