I think my car blew its head gasket, but theirs no water in oil,if idling temperature stay normal, fans do come on when idling for long.I`ve changed spark plugs, plug wires, thermostat and heat sensor unit.As soon as i drive for a short distance it over heats, steam coming out of over flow bottle. When i rev the cars engine white smoke comes out of tail pipe with water.I also fear my exhaust menufalt gasket is blown, could that be the reason for the water to dispersing from the tail pipe.....or Is my cars head gasket blown?

White smoke from the exhaust and overheating would almost certainly mean a blown head gasket.
the head gasket has gone between a cylinder and a cooling channel so exhaust gasses can get in to the cooling system resulting in the boiling and water from the cooling system is getting into the cylinder resulting in the white smoke (actually steam) from the exhaust.
the exhaust manifold is a separate issue that can be replaced when the head gasket is repaired.

Ok that makes sense, after re checking all over again i found that my lower hose from radiator to engine is almost cold to the upper hose.could it be my water pump thats gone rather than my head gasket

  • paul miles Mar 30, 2011

the bottom hose would normally feel cooler than the top hose.
hot water from the engine goes through the top hose into the radiator.
it then cools as it flows through the radiator and the cooler water returns through the bottom hose.
the fact that the top hose is getting hot suggest that the water pump is circulating water ok.
i am afraid that everything still points to a blown head gasket rather than a water pump.

99 alero 3.4 blew the head gasket, intake gasket and water pump. Changed all of it. Rough start and high idle now. What could cause the oil light to stay on with the engine knocking and shaking?

More bad news. Have the oil pressure checked. Did any coolant get in the oil? Did it run like that for some time? Knocking and shaking is bad news-check it out carefully.

Overheating problem, slight knocking coming from motor, small amount of whiteish smoke from exhaust

Ok stop leak is a gimmick, im thinking you plugged your radiator up with it, if you are blowing white smoke out the tail pipe chances are blown head gasket from overheating, either way the t-stat should be replaced in doing either job. Chances are the heater core will be plugged too.

White smoke= Water/coolant in combustion chamber
Blue smoke= Oil in combustion chamber
Black smoke= excessive fuel in combustion chamber

If you got a blown head gasket, water is getting mixed with your oil, pretty much ruining it, and your oil's viscosity will be affected, causing oil pressure to drop and your light turns on.

How do you know your car is overheating if it's not showing in your gauge?

When replacing blown gaskets there are a few things that is best to do, like sandblasting the heads, clean, scrape block and use proper torque an sequence, only removing old gasket and placing new ones won't fix the issue, those gaskets go through extreme conditions, expansion, temp changes, etc, they need to be put mindfully. I mention this because it seems you changed a lot and ended up with the original issue...

If your gasket is blown you need to fix that asap, then identify where is your coolant leak/blockage that causes alleged overheating, doing a coolant flush might help. Good luck.

1996 nissan maxima overheating

i believe the question was explained as fans work!! why all the fan inop answers?? anyway...you will need to check the water pump first...if you change it then make sure your cataltic converters are not plugged. from there its ussually a combustion leak from cracked or defective head gaskets due to the mileage. if it stays cool at idle its deff not a cooling fan problem..the fans only are used primary at idle. hope this helps

My 1999 Chevy Malibu is losing the coolant though the overflow hose by the resevior I've had my head gaskets replaced there is no overheating no water oil mix, but my radiator fans arent working I

Sounds like you need to disconnect the Radiators' electric fans and have them tested. You absolutely must have them working, or your car will overheat. Check to see if the Temperature guage is working.

You need to go to a good autoparts store and have them test the fans and charge and test your battery. You may need some sensors to activate the Radiator fans, but you could be running the battery down with shorted cooling fans.

There are also Relays which work with the Radiator fans. The overflow will stabilize once the water gets into where it belongs. Make sure your Thermostat is not clogged with the sealer.

1990 honda accord ex overheating fans not turning on, tested sensor conectors with jumper and fans come on.starts overheating at stoplights but temperature drops to normal while driving. have been told...

You will have to replace the fan sensor. If the fans are not working then the temperature will rise when stopped and cool down when running because of the air coming through he radiator.
A head gasket leak will show up by lose of water and bubbles in the radiator, with it topped up to the neck of the filler. Worst indication is water in the oil and out the exhaust.

if it is the head gasket there will be coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, I would check to make sure the electric fan is operating, could also be a stuck thermostat or clogged radiator (both of which are MUCH cheaper to check and repair than a head gasket change.

Heater blowing cold air

My 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8s with 55,000 mi. blows cold air from the heater. Coolant not circulating in engine. Lower hose stays cool to touch. Both heater hoses cold. Changed thermostat - didn't fix it. Coolant not leaking or dirty. None in oil - no oil in radiator. Changed worn water pump belt - pump spins freely with no noise or resistance. Cooling fans come on after warm-up. Temperature gauge stays in normal range then jumps to hot and back again. Coolant good to 10 below - didn't freeze here yet. No other problems or repairs to car. Afraid to drive and make worse. Help!
