Buy the rebuilt axle assembly, it comes with everthing, it is the best way to assure a successful repair, all full service parts stores like NAPA and others can get these in a few days.

Do both rear wheels have traction when your 4x4 is not engaged and if not then how does the 4wd work

independent 4x4 manages each wheel in turn applying power to the wheel with the most resistance and less power to wheels that have low road resistance, manual 4x4 has power to the differencials of the front and rear axals even if one wheel of each axal has no traction with a dif lock in place the wheels will keep turning. it can be that when a 4x4 is disengaged that the diferencial is no longer locked, then if one wheel has no traction the vehicle will stop moving and the power will got out through the wheel with least resistance and cause it to spin. also some vehicles have a limited slip differentical that has a small clutch plate build in the ensure that wheel spin is reduced.

I have a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country Minivan. When turning the wheel either way, the car makes a horrible grinding noise and the steering wheeling makes a whistling noise at the same time.

i don,t know what the whistling noise is but it sounds like your cv joints may need to be looked at. the bearings in the cv joint maybe going bad.

ck the CV boot. if its broken you need a new cv axle, if its ok, jack up the car so both wheels are off the ground. either put the car in drive or just manually spin each front wheel while gripping the coil spring for the front strut. if you feel any (roughness) at all, that wheel bearing is bad. it should be smooth. if you have a bad one you will know it by this method. Even good mechanics sometimes replace the wrong bearing, but this 100% works every time.

Jeep Liberty Clicking Noise

This could be one of a few things, check the seals on your cv boots, If a cv joint has grit inside it can create this problematic sound you have listed here, If the sound is emminating from the cv joint(s) then the chances are that you will need replacement cv joints, these are mid priced But always purchase the best that you can afford if you are prepared to do the job yourself, a haynes manual will prove to be invaluable even for thee most mediocre home mechanic, if you are having a garage do the work then don't buy anything as will not fit parts that they have not sourced because if the part fails & you were seriously injured or worse you could sue them for negligence, if its not the cv boots then then it could be the wheel bearings & these could also be done at home, another thing to check is the fan, sounds strange but I have known cases where some thing (s) have got stuck to the blades of the fans & caused the sound you are explaining, Get A Haynes Manual, it is well worth the initial outlay of under 2o quid & if you do the work yourself It will pay for itself in the first couple of jobs, & nothing beats the achievement of working on your own vehicle & solving it's problems - with a little help from us!!
