Dash board gauges not working

My speedometer and tachometer stopped working. The tach appears to be dead, but the speedometer needle vibrates like it is trying to engage. Intermittently, both gauges will work, but as soon as I turn off the car and turn it back on, they will not be working again. Any idea what the problem is and how I can solve it?

On my daughters the instruments work only about one in five starts and turning the engine off and restarting does not help. Only if you shut the ignition off for at least 20 min is there a chance they might work again. Is there a relay for the instrument panel ? Could it be a ground wire ?
If anyone has resolved this problem please post it.
    Thank you

I have the same exact problem with my 2000 Cabrio - it started right after getting the battery replaced.

Sorry if during the chat session we could not help you much but it's hard to find a solution just like that as we expert will try hard to facilitate the process of fault finding but some problems can't be solved over the net and they need special diagnosis equip. Hope you understand that.Cheers

My fuel gauge tach gauge speedometer heater temp gauge and driver power seat quit working

check the fuses. they are under the back seat just pull up on the lower part of the back seat and it will come out. fuse box is on the drivers side. check to see if water is getting in that could be the cause.

Same prob. Tach and odometer dead. will come on intermittently

I had a similar issue but the issue is not related to connections. There are many steps involved with this, but it is related to two transiters on the circuit board that have overheated the connection for the odometer and the tachometer. To complete this job, I did it with a $17 soder gun and $3 worth of tin solder.

Anyways, I got it to work after this.

You need to unplug the battery, take off the radio panel, the dash, unscrew the speedometer casing from being held on, take off the back, unscrew about 15 screws, unplug the gauges from the computer, then take out the circuit board. There should be two blue transitters very close together and between them, a small nub that has likely worn away. Also on the other side of the board, a browned spot likely exists. Each of the transitters will need new solder.

This link that I followed will fix the issue.

Defective tachometer and speedometer

Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one, with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected, the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter. I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?
